g3258 + z87-g41 + corsair h60

Just purchased these for a new build but Im curious as to what kind of OC i can expect. My plan is to push it as much as I safely can. Im hoping to get 4.5ghz minimum but Ive never overclocked anything before.

4.5GHz is a very ambitious minimum! Be warned that you could well have a dud, that won't even overclock past 4.2GHz. Overclocking is never guaranteed, and every CPU is different. 4.5GHz should be a goal, not a minimum. Take it easy and see where you get to. Make sure you test thoroughly!

You never know beforehand, some pentiums don't get far, mine goes to 4.7 (4.8 with unreasonable voltage, but I'm not going to stress test that). Not sure what the average OC is.

I got a 4.5 OC on the stock cooler, on a cheapo microcenter msi mobo. It just gets hot thats all.

Stick to 1.3v or below and push it as far as you can. Keep the temps under 85C. Every chip is different so the only to know is to push it yourself. Good luck.

Aw that sucks. I hope I have a halfway decent chip or it defeats the purpose of me buying it. I think i read too many reviews saying its a good chip when overclocked. I probably should have played it safe and spent a few more bucks and bought a completely different model

Worst case, you can probably get 90% of what you paid and swap it for an i5, which will benefit from your Z series chipset.

Yeah i tried to buy my parts with it in mind that i ca later upgrade the cpu and nothing else. Thats why. I went with the z87 mobo and not a.cheaper version. Also the mobo came with a free 1x8gb ddr3 ram

I'm messing around on mine. Does 4.2ghz on 1.185volts. Wants over 1.26v to do 4.4.

Seems to do fine on stock cooler up to 1.26v. Doesn't use much more power than stock settings... 20-30w additional.

Love the chip, very snappy in Windows. Haven't had much chance to game yet.

Bit confused on RAM speed. I'm running 1600mhz, seems to be same speed in synthetics as when set to 1333mhz in BIOS. Chip doesn't officially support 1600mhz.

For reference my 3258 does 4.5Ghz @ 1.285 volts but I can't set the memory speed beyond 1600mhz on a Z97 series motherboard even when using DDR3-2400 memory.

Bad idea. Intel CPUs don't drop in price they get obsolete. You should have just started with a locked i5 and an H97 if you don't overclock, or an unlocked i5 and Z97 if you do. Its false economy to buy cheap now and upgrade later.

Ive been running a core 2 duo for the last 3 years. What you may consider obsolete, will be an upgrade to me. I bought the g3258, so if next year I find even an i5-4430, its an upgrade for me, not everyone else. Im also on a budget, so an i5 right now was not possible for me.

I think that the cheapest Core i5 (with included cooler) and a cheaper motherboard would have been better and more "future-proof" choices instead of G3258 + Z87 motherboard + Corsair H60.

Unfortunately the 4430 is completely non-overclockable, making the Z series board and watercooling rather unnecessary. In your case, it's "Go K or go home".

Did they change the "Turbo + 4 speed bins" on Haswell non-K chips? Because I know for the Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPUs on "Z" chipset motherboards, you can overclock by this amount. For example, my i7-3770 can be set for a multiplier of 43 x 100mhz = 4.3GHz with all 4 cores running this speed. Stock speed is 3.4GHz and max turbo is 3.9GHz (34 and 39 multipliers, respectively).

Yeah, Haswell non-K are completely non-overclockable, though I believe you can, on some boards, run all cores at max stock turbo.

I was under the impression that the corsair h60 would just be a good cpu cooler regardless of which cpu I got? I only bought it bc it was on sale from newegg for $30. I thought it would be a good enough cooler for any cpu vs spending $20+ on a heatsync/fan combo. Did i screw up getting the h60?

The h60 would be a fine cooler for a non-k processor. In fact, it would be overkill. You'd be one of those people who could probably run Prime95 28.5 Blend on your Haswell without crashing/throttling @ stock.

As for "any CPU", I wouldn't count on the H60 handling every possible x86 CPU out there. You wouldn't want it on an overclocked 5950 or 5960x. But you aren't in the market for monsters like those, so you're good to go with that Pentium.

I'm sure the cooler will last you a long time, just probably more than you need for this particular build. Definitely a great buy for $30, and I'd have been tempted to pick one up had I seen that.

I've overclocked my i5 with the stock cooler before and was able to get about 4.2GHz before running into temperature problems, though Haswell does run hotter due to its extra voltage when running AVX instructions.

Good to hear that. Yes you are correct I will probably never have plans on going the x99 route. And im pretty sure if I ever get to an i7 it will be a non K, although Its very possible I may try to upgrade to an i5 K next year but thats a long time away so who knows.

Yea the only reason I bought the h60 was because of the price. Newegg recently had the h100 for $49 and If I hadnt bought the h60 I would have gotten the h100 just to future proof my cpu cooler.

. . . and that's where the h60 will give aznbob a little extra piece of mind, OC or not. Not like he's going to be running Prime95 28.5 all day long. Or is he?!?

~$30 for the h60 is a good price. No worries there. I'd be tempted by a ~$50 h100 myself but I've still got my d14 + way-too-loud fans so I'm sticking with that for awhile.

In any case, you should do reasonably well on any Haswell product with four or fewer cores using an h60.
