G3 Macintosh Accelerator Card - Price Drop!!!

In December 2001, I purchased a brandnew Newertech Maxpowr G3 PDS card for my first generation Mac PowerPC 6100 for $209. I thought I got a good deal because they raised the price to $229 one day afterwords. Now, they dropped the price to $179!

These are new, sealed, imported 330 MHz cards (unlike the used ones on Ebay)! They also have a 1 year warranty.

G3 Accelerator Card

This is a good deal for those with older PowerPC Macs. It speeds up Photoshop 5.5 faster than my Celeron 500 (100MHz bus) computer could muster. They also have other PowerPC upgrade cards on their site.

The company is started by friendly and responsive employees of the well renowned Newertech. Newertech has the top rated accerlerator cards.

Word of Advice: Avoid Sonnet accelerator cards for Macs. I purchased 1 (in Oct/Nov 2001) and it would barely function crashing 19 out of 20 bootups literally. I exchanged it for a new one only to have the same frustrating results.

Also great prices at Other World Computing on PowerLogix.

Get on their mail list for even better prices. I just got the PowerLogix PowerForce 400/1MB for $145. Newertech are good, but out of business.

Technoware house does offer a 1 year warranty on these new cards.

Yeah, I felt bad when Newertech went out of business. When Newertech was in business, I was in school and too poor to afford their accelerator cards. Consequently, my aging Mac fell into disuse. I remember reading good reviews on their accelerator cards but could only dream about getting one. I remember Sonnet had problems with their cards and despite offering software patches, their cards were never up to par with Newertech's. Whenever Newertech encountered a problem, they redesigned their cards instead of just throwing out an ineffectual software workaround. I suppose this costly dedication to customer support was what caused Newertech to go out of business.

Unfortunately, companies like Sonnet which uses false advertising and hype (ala Microsoft) and bad customer support, survived the internet company fallout and is claiming to be a "top 50 up and coming company." What a joke because when I had problems with my first accelerator card (from Sonnet) and I called their customer service for assistance, I got the run around. They put the blame on my machine and my RAM brand (telling me buy "better" RAM from one of their suppliers when I had been using Micron RAM) and told me to reinstall, take out all but 2 extentions, and zap the P-Ram four times (a long tedious process which I had already done 20 times). They finally told me to get an exchange ... which I did but I still could not get the replacement card booting without crashing midway on bootup. Sonnet customer support basically dragged it out so that I couldn't refund my card past the 30 day deadline. Consequently, I had to contact the Better Business Bureau to get a refund. Sonnet definetely treated me very poorly despite purchasing their premium $400 card.

Luckily, I discovered Technowarehouse started by former Newertech managers. They're really nice and responsive to my e-mails. Moreover, they stood by their product which worked perfectly on first installation. Now, I can use my mac to do things other than just word processing, like play mp3s smoothly, play Starcraft (using a 2 button mac mouse), and edit photos with Photoshop with great speed. As such, I'm sharing my wonderful discovery and posting my first "hot deal."
