G-Sync vs Freesync, will display become fragmented?

Currently AMD has no presence at all on the mobile market, so I don't really see Freesync as having any meaningful impact on mobile. I have seen some gsync Clevos though.

We already know Intel will support Freesync, we just don't know when. In the mean time, Freesync in laptops seems to be a really great idea.

Nvidia dominates desktop sales.

Is it possible the end result will be Freesync dominates mobile while Gsync dominates desktop?
No, the open standard (almost) always wins. The death grip that Nvidia has on the dGPU market ensures that they'll, at the very least, recoup their R&D expenditure & then some. The mobile market share is actually a lot higher than their desktop market share, so your conclusion is also off the mark.

It looks like Freesync is dominating in overall adoption in desktop monitors, especially in having actual penetration into middle and low end screens, and seems to be showing up as an addition to monitors like it's a default once they get a chance to refresh the monitor internals. I'd expect Freesync to show up in some laptops, become a kind of default in desktop with a collection of high end GSync panels as the exception, and both types of sync to be matched to the dGPU in mobile.

No, the open standard (almost) always wins.

The problem is with only two sides and one is open and one is closed (and refuses to also support the open), effectively they are both closed. Intel could be a game changer, but for now they do not support Freesync so they are a non-player.

I'd really like there to be dual Freesync and G-Sync monitors available. But either they cannot coexist due to technological incompatibilities, or Nvidia forbids it as part of their G-Sync module acceptance.

Well freesync has already passed gsync in monitor adoption on desktop. Mobile will likely follow whoever wins on mobile dGPU for the 1st FinFET gen

I suspect nvidia will start supporting adaptive sync at some point.

Meanwhile they don't mind locking more people into a future nvidia gpu by selling gsync screens.

Freesync already has more momentum in terms of monitor choices. As soon as Intel releases an adaptive sync capable part it's gonna be GGsync.

AMD added a ticking time bomb as soon as they announced Freesync. It's really too bad that Gsync cost is prohibitive compared to the same panels with Freesync. I give Nvidia credit for making the issue of tearing front and centre but they should have went with an open standard instead of their usual BS vendor lock in and now it's starting to bite them in the *ss.

Once Nvidia figures out how many people have stopped buying Geforce cards to buy Freesync monitors (and therefore Freesync capable Radeons) they'll have to allow both technologies on their cards. This will be akin to admitting defeat as monitor manufacturers will most defiantly drop Gsync pretty quickly once this happens.

Freesync will get 100% of the Market. That may or may not affect the Video Card Market Share distribution though. However, every Monitor will become Freesync by default.
