G Sync Question

It depends on what G-Sync setting you're using. G-Sync has two modes that it operates in: full screen or desktop. If you're using full-screen, it will only enable when a graphics renderer creates a full-screen window (borderless window does not count). If your player does this, G-Sync should affect it. Although, most people tend to use borderless window for players.

If I remember correctly, on the other hand, the desktop version of G-Sync ties itself to the currently active window's refresh rate.

So - some new monitors have FreeSync .
If I get one of these for a GeForce board , and not doing games , but yes movies etc. , I will not be missing out on any performance improvement , and also not be getting any negative performance , or some sort of compatibility issues ?
 
I'm suspicious that I've been getting frame skipping / stuttering on my 144hz G-Sync display when trying to watch video. It really aggravated me when I first got my new display last fall. I spent a while tweaking the settings but I do not have any real conclusions to share other than I still suspect a compatibility issue.

If you'd like to pursue this then I'll share. When I turned the refresh rate down to 60hz and turned off G Sync it appeared to help with video playback. I'll see about giving more specific feedback later, as I'm currently running 144hz and G Sync for Fullscreen only. I think, in my experience, G Sync needs to be off while watching video.

A few questions...

Do you suffer from this on the G-Sync monitor itself? If so, is G-Sync currently set to Desktop mode? If you're suffering from it on another monitor, is it in web video in Chrome? If so, turn off GPU hardware acceleration. Chrome has an issue where it doesn't handle multiple refresh rates well, and it causes weird stuttering in online video... and I think it's only when on the lower refresh rate monitor.

Actually early digital Japanese anime had variable refresh rates. At first we had 24fps (with 3:2 pulldown to make it 30fps) animation with a 30fps interlaced credits sequence... No big deal; we mostly just decimated the credits down to 24fps and the credits would stutter a bit (no big deal!).
Then we got random interlaced 30fps CG scenes mixed in.
We even ended up with 30fps CG mixed into the same scene with 24fps animation... 0_O
Lucky I don't think this happens any more...
(I used to do fansubbing a bit)
