This is what you agree to when you order supplies.

Can we end this stupid debate now?

its not that i mind free boxes, its that it feels wasteful to order that many and only use 5. and i really dont like the idea of 20 excess boxes lying around.

are these free at the post office too? if they are, then i can just go there, package it there, and ship it there all in one trip.

if you have extra boxes, you can just take them to the post office and give them back.

Yes , Give back to you'r local Post Office what you don't need
Funny thing is , due to gov Bull, my local PO could not get certian sizes of these boxes
I added those to my order, to get them for them , and let my local mailman pick them up in his truck
Now they think I'm a nice guy, Go Figgure
They couldn't get them, But I can.
God bless the GOV...... and their rules......

There are actually a LOT of different free items... regular boxes, folding boxes, mail tubes, tape, labels, more.

From any of the product pages mentioned, find the SEARCH field (lower left) and put in "Priority Mail Box"

I think it's alright if you're still shipping USPS. The idea is that they are giving away the boxes to intice people into shipping with them. When people abuse this and ship with somebody else, they are ruining it for those of us who aren't @$$holes.

That's funny you just included yourself in the @ssholes because you're ignorant enough to believe it's OK to flip a priority box inside out as long as you're still shipping USPS. How do you think they subsidize the "free boxes"? It's not by giving away boxes to people who flip priority boxes inside out then ship the items first class or media rate. Hey, while your at it you might as well use a free priority label or express label on your media or first class package. Why don't you give that a shot and see how well it works out for you.

Excuse me? Did you not hear me say "I think..."? Why don't you calm down a little bit... the assumption I made is perfectly valid. I wasn't able to find the agreement that stated the ToU, but it is perfectly viable to beleive that you can use the USPS supplies for other methods of USPS.. I was referring to the @ssholes that turn them inside out, and ship through some other carrier.

Judging by your adament response, are you sure you don't do this yourself?

Awesome! Free Boxes!!! Now I don't have to go to Food Lion or Harris Teeter to get my boxes when I sell stuff on eBay. Thanks for the post.

Your assumption is not at all viable or vaild when the terms state:

"I understand that Express Mail®, Priority Mail®, Global Express Guaranteed®, Global Express Mail® and Global Priority Mail® packaging is the property of the United States Postal Service and is provided solely for sending Express Mail®, Priority Mail®, Global Express Guaranteed®, Global Express Mail® and Global Priority Mail®. Misuse may be a violation of federal law."

You also might want to try reading the terms printed directly on the boxes:

"This packaging is the property of the U.S. Postal Service and is provided solely for use in sending Priority Mail. Misuse may be a violation of federal law."

Judging by your adament response, are you sure you don't do this yourself?
I never said I did or didn't, but then again I never called anyone who did an @sshole and then tried to use my ignorance of the USPS's terms to misinform others about different improper uses of the boxes that were more fitting to my needs.

Local post offices only carry the small ones, so sizes like 12x and 7x aren't available.

I pick up the ones I use at the post office. There is no "terms" that I sign or agree to, thus I'm free to use them how I wish.

Mike

Wow they have adhesive mailing labels too!
Although no DC stickers, but oh well. Those will come in handy when I start mailing stuff across the country.
Support the government by using USPS. 😛

Pffft.. the local post office has a better deal unless you need the biggest box. There's no waiting and no contracts! Grab all you can, smile at the camera, and there you go.

So far, i built myself a table (liquor-holder) out of one. Next i'll be working on a sofa and a few chairs (my last project was a chair made from aluminum beercans and that was too weak to sit on 🙂

You know you're a redkneck when...

This is true, they aren't allowed to stock more than one box unit at any given time, so most post offices (even busy ones) only have limited supplies, and they can't even get the larger 12x12x8 and some other sizes. But if you take your extra unused stock to them, they will be very happy.

Geez people, lots of stuff you do every day is illegal. Technically it's illegal to use those milk crates or plastic postal bins but I know lots of good honest people that have a few of those out in the shed. Also, did you know it's illegal to have sex in any position other than missionary??? It's true, its on the books in most states. My point is "he who is free of blame be the one to throw the first stone". Let the mods do their jobs, it's their job to do, not yours, they're actually quite good at it. You don't need to wave your conscience all over the place.

Yes, it is assumed that you will use the free boxes USPS provides for Priority mailings only as they sell others for non-Priority, however I have never seen a contract or legally binding clause that they make you sign before accepting some free boxes. I've never even had them say "you know these are for Priority mail only" when giving them to me. In fact, I only had one guy not accept a box that was turned inside out but he was just a jerk who gave everyone a hard time. I wrote a letter asking if it was wrong for me to recycle Priority boxes that were shipped to me by turning them inside out and the reply was "of course not". I used that letter the next time I dealt with said jerk at the P.O. 🙂

They don't have a big sign saying "free boxes here" because they know everyone would use them for everything else. It is just a nice service they offer to informed customers who are usually the ones keeping them in business. You ever think about how much postage one day of trading on the Anandtech forums generates??? We are creating plenty of good business for them, the free boxes are just a nice perk. You're not ripping anyone off if you use one or two for something else, or if you don't send priority every now and then. The boxes obviously pay for themselves otherwise they wouldn't give them away so freely. Claiming that it is illegal or "morally wrong" is like refusing to blow your nose in a napkin at a buffet because they are intended to be used for your mouth only! 🙂

Really! There are whole nations full of people that feel Americans are the devil and there are ruthless dictators out there that have no guilt over the slaughter of massive amounts of people (including our own rocket scientist of a president) and there is probably someone within a few miles of you right now that would shank you in the neck for $5 or a fix and you don?t feel the least bit silly pointing your finger at someone who might use a few boxes for something other than their intended purpose??? Get some perspective.

Sorry for the rant, wind me up and watch me go. 🙂

You can also get free shipping supplies from FedEx if you have an account. A FedEx account is free, and even individuals can have one(I've had one for a few years) ...

When you order supplies, they ask you to sign an agreement, either through snail mail or with the boxes you ordered.

Thanks for the post...it was news to me. I always ship my small ebay stuff Priority Mail and now I won't have to scrounge for tape for a while.

This is a good deal if you want to ship priority mail, everything is branded already, etc.

But, what I do is recycle. When I know that I am going to have to ship something, I grab a few boxes from my workplace and reuse them! I'm in the Engineering dept. and we order stuff all the time, so there's boxes by the trash every day, complete with bubble wrap and all! 🙂 And I've recently started using the online UPS shipping center. I can print off the tracking label, tape it on, and set my package down at the dock and UPS picks it up! No more going to the post office or a drop off location!

So, the lesson of the day, look around the trash bins at work, or go to the shipping area...

Do you know why they "can't" get the 12x12x8 boxes? Because they sell those generic ones in the PO. Stocking that size would cut down on their box sales.
