I don't use an active AV program; I'm not an idiot. When I do scan my drives periodically, I still use an old version of F-Secure. Free virus definition updates.

I think it scans every friggin 0 and 1 in every line of code, for the resource hit I would hope so....

You must be having a nitemare

Not anymore, just installed the PoS

Wow...it let you uninstall? I didn;t think any Norton apps let you uninstall. I thought it was their policy to bork any OS permanently.

I've had the corp version on my networks for the last 4 years. Pretty happy with it.

Did it fine under XP, have not tried it on my primary rig(2K). I was right in the middle of dubbing a movie

I use it constantly. I do not have a resident virus scanner such as that bloat infested crap from Mcafee or Norton. In all my years of computing I have never had a virus and I download things from everywhere all of the time. Whenever I get something I do not trust to open without scanning I use Housecall and run a scan on the folder I put the files in. I can't recall any of them being bad either come to think of it but I will not use them until I have scanned them since there is always a first time for everything.
Personally, I don't feel a need to run one on my system using my resources and causing conflicts with other programs. Seems to have worked like a charm so far.

I suspect it's Anti Virus Grisoft

Used to have Norton Internet Security 2003 on our two machines at home, but once the subscriptions ran out, then it's either pay for that, pay to upgrade to 2004 (activation prevents use on two machines) or pay to upgrade to Pro which allows multiple installs. Much easier to find the corporate NAI grant and use that. No complaints so far, no appreciable slowing down, picks up viruses in emails etc. and takes very little resources, even when doing a full scan.

Another vote for NAI's McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.1. It's great here at work! I liked it so much I took a copy home to use on my home PC.

AVG's free version's core is never going to be updated, right? They stopped at 6 i believe...

as for norton, i run scans overnight, and disabled auto protect... works fine that way.

AVG.
Wait till Norton has some amazingly complicated sys error where it suddenly locks down your machine. You can move the mouse around and thats about it. Yep, it happened to me. Nope, I'll never ever ever use Norton again after that incident.

Norton 2k4 wanted to scan everything. It absolutly loved to fvck with me when I was installing a game or running Emule. I'd get this box saying the install program was waiting for Norton to finish scanning file "blablabla.whatever". Uninstalled it and started using Norton 2k2 again. No problems but I think I'll give AVG a shot considering all the high praises.

I use NIS 2004. Works great. No slow down. I do love it how people sometimes assume it is always one product, rather than a combination of factors that may be causing the problem. Whatever. If you don't like it, there are plenty of other alternatives, paid or free. Have at them. The NIS subscription is one year, not 6 months, as was said. Honestly I didn't see if this was addressed earlier. And regarding activation, it only sucks if you try stealing the software. People who legally use the software are not normally going to be concerned with the three-second "ordeal" of the mouse click required to activate.

I use NIS 2003 and will use it for a looooong time. I'm not "upgrading" to 2004. Once I heard about activation, I just didn't want any part of it.

So? What does that mean if it has activation?

It means that you can't download it from the net and use it for free, stupid. Jeez

You must live in a hole. You can still download NAV 2004 Pro for free off a well known pubblic website. Activation just pisses people off cuz you have to type in these long ass serials.

Installed Systemworks 2003 last night on my Teens 1 week old PC and came up with 70 infected files. I told him to cut down on the cheesy pron sites surfing. THEY ARE EVIL!!!

Bought the OEM Systemworks for cheap. He's crying about his messenger bars not being stable but I say tough bounce - deal with it.
