People who leave their computer(s) running 24x7 should be punched in the face for several minutes.

Why? We pay the bill, not you.

Global warm MY planet will you?! :|

Global warming is a scam (the past couple years here have been driving that home and we are set up for another harsh winter from the looks of things). Besides, I heat the room with the PCs, if the PCs weren't on I'd be using electric to run the heater anyway. And in the grand scheme of things, me running a few systems 24/7 isn't going to affect a darn thing.

Complain about global warming? Complain at the sun, it's the source of heat ya know.

Global warming is a reality but electricity is probably a very minor contributor especially when lot of plants are hydro dams, wind mills etc... the main contributor is probably cars. In winter for example when everyone leaves their car running for an hour or two before work. Gas/coal/oil heating etc...

You're mistaken. In the US, roughly half our electricity comes from coal.

And who the fuck leaves their car running for an hour or two before leaving? They need to be shot point blank in the face with a shotgun.

Was no big deal for me to leave PC on in the states - but believe me, it's a no-brainer to turn it off here in Europe since our utilities are *at least* 3 times higher ...

I shut mine down simply because it gets too damn hot in the computer room if I leave it on [no AC in the house]. Plus - I'm paranoid about just leaving it idle [up and running in OS] and I'm still not impressed with sleep/hibernation mode.

In addition to that topic....

I was amazed how MANY people in *large* companies have their PCs on 24/7.....just to run screensavers like webshots. (I was working at a big company and literally every PC had some stupid webshots screensaver). Do you have an idea how many MILLIONS could be saved if each big company had a policy that PCs need to be shut down before you leave work?

I was finally able to figure out how to enable hibernate (instead of the malfunctioning hybrid sleep) on my vista64... used it and the damn thing takes so long to go down and come back up that I may as well use shutdown. It's not like that on my XP laptop.

I actually have 6 computers that run 24x7.

7 if you count the 386sx-16mhz that doesn't do anything productive, but is still cool because it's a running 386 with a reasonably modern OS on it.

Most people leave their cars running for 10-15 minutes, at most, in the morning (in the winter when it's cold out). If they leave it longer than that, they are stupid, or they have a malfunctioning thermostat in their car.

And as far as cars being so bad, look up gas powered lawnmowers. Mowing your lawn for an hour spews more crap than driving your car for something like 6 months.

Also, cars (as a whole) are absolutely dwarfed by Natural Gas / Oil / Coal power plants in terms of emissions. Not even close.

The dumbest comment I've seen in a while on the internet. Congratulations.

But turning your machine on and off hurts the starter... er I mean, hurts the power button!

I have a couple servers that run 24/7 too. The backup server is the only one that is off all the time and only turns on to run a job then turns off. One of these days I need to buy a killawatt or a TED (hooks to electrical panel and measures total consumption) and check how much money this costs me.

I'm only consuming like $30 of power total though, last I checked. I suppose that might go up now that it's winter. Running the furnace blower, heater under the garage, etc. That heater alone is a killer. 2800 watts. I had to install a double pole 30amp breaker just for that.

can you explain what your servers do and why you need more than one?

The saving was more actually close to 50$ a month, but this machine is a monster with like 7 or 8 hard drives. I have to say that at the same time I also started turning off all lights and appliances when not using them, replaced the one or two remaining bulbs in the house that weren't already CFL, and unplugged the toaster when not using it. I didn't really have many things i could unplug when not using them. Everything else thats plugged in is something like a tv or AV equipment that would lose settings or time if unplugged.

i thought things that don't "standby" like a toaster or that don't use a transformer (brick power plug) didn't matter.

I already do that.

It is basically on as soon as I come home from work, and as soon as I am about to turn in.

That seems off, my 'server' runs 24/7 and it only eats up about $10 per month, but I guess power rates are different depending on state.

I always turn my main PC off though, no point in keeping it on. It takes no time to boot.

Main server: does mail spam filtering, intranet (dev/test versions of all my sites + misc development), VMs, etc

External server: DNS + VMs (different NAT/subnet for remote access)

Backup server: backs up the two servers + my workstation

But yeah those hardly use much power tbh. They're not enterprise class with dual power supply creating more heat then a furnace, they're just built from regular PC parts. I could technically shut my machine down though as torrents and stuff are all done from a VM on the server.

that's the reason I started turning mine off when I am at work and sleeping...

my thermo is next to the room where my computer is... it gets so hot in that room that it makes my a/c run 24/7 basically.

My desktop running XP would never suspend or hibernate correctly for me, but 7 seems to do it fine. So that should help now.

(My work laptop also running XP will suspend, but it won't hibernate.)

Shut down the computer, and then send your $25 to me each month.

I use the power saving/hibernate modes on my desktops. Makes a big difference.

I would, and it'd actually help my bill as my PC is a server that work upgraded but I've got a raid controller and 4 drives. Problem is the RAID controller takes forever everytime it starts so I just leave it on. It literally heats up the entire room.

What a great idea! While we're at it, let's get rid of all the automation and technological advancements we've made over the past 50 years or so. Just think about how many jobs it would bring back! ;)
