I will not be OCing, I did say I would probably UC/UV it. I will also never have more than one GPU. 550W will probably be enough.

The FX8320 does use about 200w by itself...

APU system $663
FX8320 system $813

I'm using an Antec Gamer 750 Watt PSU for my 830 OC'd to 4.6Ghz with GTX670's in SLI. Kill o watt show a spike as high as 575 Watts.

Jesus... Seeing numbers like that make me so glad I built an APU system. Even after OC'ing the GPU to 1085MHz from 800MHz and pushing 2133 RAM, my system only consumes 155w~ at total load under things like AIDA's system stability test or Folding@Home (GPU+CPU). All I did was kick the vcore of the CPU down a bit. Under CPU-only load, the system only eats around 110w. I could probably save even more power if I upgraded to an 80 Plus PSU.

Idle is 38w.

He does have more than one GTX670, maybe two? Probably two. Each card hogs around 145~200w on its own.

With a single HD7950(OC to 1GHz) i never show more than 330W in gaming with the FX8350(see link bellow).
You will not need more than 500W 80+ PSU like the Corsair CX500 V2 (408W at 12V). If you will multi-TASK (Video transcoding/3D Rendering + Gaming) i would suggest you go for the CX600W(480W at 12V).

Centauri, Which RAM do you use? Can you clock it higher? Is the Extreme4 mobo($85) worth the extra $$ compared to yours($55)?

I might end up going for the APU. What can you tell me about your APU build?

EDIT...Your board does NOT have an HDMI port!? Just noticed that...

Eh. His system can also push 144Hz at 1080p with effects on. Yours can probably do medium at 60 frames with no effects or AA at best.

I have 1 GTX 670, and it can max out (60 frames per second) pretty much any non-Crysis game at 1080p, and it actually only uses roughly 150W while under gaming (yes, definitely less stressful than F@H, but that's not what I usually do) and idles around 35-40W.

Although getting such an overclock out of an APU does deserve a small round of applause!

Centauri: I"ll tell you what my measurements of power were but first the specs on the system less the monitor. Asus Sabertooth FX mb Rev 1 with 16 G DDR3 ram OC, Haf932 case with 2 230 mmfans, 1 in front and I in side. Corsair H100 cooler with 4 Corsair HP fans 120mm exhaust fan, FX8350 OC to 4600Mhz (21x219) with vcore at 1.46 for stability no matter what programs are run, 2 EVGA GTX670 FTW video cards in SLI with EVGA precision settings at 145%v gpu offset 134 and mem offset 334. I have 3 HDs Intel X25-M 80 g, WD Velocity Raptor 150g and WD blue 500g.
I use a Kill A Watt P3 measuring device and Use AIDA64 Stress test with ALL items check when I run stress test (CPU,FPU,cache, sys mem, disks and gpus).

This is not listed to make excuses for the large power draw, just to fully disclose that I am measuring all of these items on overall Power draw ( I happen to think some member understate actual power draw)

At Idle system draws 164W

On full stress 500W and I've seen spikes as high as 575.

When buying a new PSU you have to ask how far will you push the system.

Yes I have 2 and I have OC'd them via EVGA Precision. From what I have read if you buy 2 7970s in CF you will use more power than my 2 GTX670s!;)

This entire discussion on PSU's brings up an interesting point. The FX8350, though more efficient than the 8150 still draws fair amount of power and really spikes as you overclock it. The same can be said for the AMD 7970 gpu.

Will a 550W PSU be enough for a 8320 and a HD7870? Cutting it too close for a high end GPU right?

(At the moment, the APU system hovering at about $662 and the FX8320 system at $862, a bit less with the 550W PSU around a clean $800. The GPU for the build is a very cheap 7750, just need the features not the performance.)
Yes

At Idle system draws 164W. On full stress 500W and I've seen spikes as high as 575.

My FX idles at 72W. I am waiting for a Seasonic 550G because when using Furmark my PSU quits and resets the PC.
The 990 uses a bit more than my 970 chip.
The FX is an extremely responsive chip. I prefer it over my 3770K system. And idling power usage is hardly different.
