Is the stock heat sink and Fan that comes with the FX60 better than the "Thermaltake Venus 12" that I am currently using with my AMD64 4000+. The reason for asking is that the unit that comes with the FX60 has heat pipes built into it.
 
Yes it is. It has heatpipes, the Venus does not. In tests the Opteron heatsink is about equal to a thermaltake XP-90 (it's actually a couple degrees hotter when the XP-90 is fitted with a good 90mm fan, but very similar), and the XP-90 spanks the Venus.
 
I understood the Opty HSF was for Opty dual cores only? not the 1xx series single cores? Or am I pleasantly mistaken on this one?
 
So is it my understanding then that the heat pipes make that much difference in cooling? I hate to sound so dense..I just wanna make sure this bad boy is well cooled.
 
Heatpipes do indeed make a difference. are you ordering an FX60, or what? I dont know how the Venus 12 performs, but the Opteron one, which I believe to be the same as you get with FX60 is pretty damn good. if its beign compared to an XP-90, it cant be bad.
 
Actually I got it today..thats why I was asking about the hsf. I didnt know which route I should take with the hsf issue. ... LOL.. I opened the box up and was very surprised with the heatpipes on the heatsink...then I was wondering.. "now what do I do about my Venus 12?"...lol

Last year some single core opterons came with the good cooler but this year it's only on the dual cores. I simply said "opteron cooler" for simplicity.
 
Damn, I am gonna get a single core Opteron, and thought it would be great if it came with that cooler. Oh well, watercooling it is (was hoping to delay spending a grand on cooling for a while)
 
get rid of all your thermaltake products now before you accidently associate it with your fx60 and it might blow up. really. lol. naw the stock hsf with the fx60 should be fine before you spend your money, attach it and try it out for a month or so. if your temps get over 50 at any point load or not get a scythe ninja, try it again. if still above 50 then get a nexus silent 120. if still too high then clean out your case and rewire for airflow. i guarantee the scythe with nexus will be about 40-45C highest idle
 
Thanks LOUISSSSS.. I will check out those products for future possibilities. The way I've always looked at things is.. I'd rather spend a little extra than be sorry later.
 
One other question I need to ask before installing the FX60.. seems I've heard about some kinda microsoft d/l that is needed for dual core gaming?.. some kinda hotfix? or am I hearing those "voices" again ?...lol Anyone know of this?..the patch or hotfix thingy that is...lol
 
only thing I know of is you will need to do a quick change in your BIOS, so it supports Dual Core. Have never done that on your mobo, but there should be instructions in the manual, or somewhere online.
