fx5900 vs 6600gt

i currently have a fx5900xt and am thinking of going to a 6600gt...would it be worth it?

i cant seem to find any benchmarks comparing the two cards directly...all i can find is 6800 with the 5900

anyone offer any insight or a link to a benchie comparing the two?

For Doom and Half-Life you can just look at the numbers from 2 AnandTech articles using the same demos / same resolutions. i.e. the roundup aritcles listing the fx5900 then later 6600gt article that doesn't mention the fx5900.

From my reading, the 5900 is now only smooth at 640x480 - 800x600 for recent games, while the 6600gt is smooth at 1024x768 minimum and 1280x1204 on some.

If you have a 1280x1024 LCD you might want at least a plain 6800 so you don't have to drop down to 1024x768 on some games.

the 6600gt would be a huge improvement over your current card. I say go for it. Plus, think of it this way, when you bought your card you might've spent in excess of 250+ dollars, and looking at things now the 6600gt is around 200 bucks... You'll be treating yourself to a good deal man. Go for it!

if 9800 > 5900
and 6600 gt > 9800 pro (in most cases)
then 6600 > 5900

it's worth getting, just make sure you get the agp version.

Nice math 🙂 I would agree, although if it's working OK for what you want now, there will always be a better deal later

is that comparison for the vanilla 6800? because a vanilla 6800 is pretty much equal to the 6600 gt (if you don't OC your vid card)

That is correct. The 6600GT is faster at lower resolutions due to superior Core and Memory clocks. However the 12 pipes of the 6800NU help it at high res with AA and AF. Additionally i think it has another Vertex Processor.

I agree with Insomniak. 6600GT will win against anything from last generation save a 9800XT, but only when running high res with AA and AF.

I dunno, everything I've seen shows it beating a 9800XT by 5 to 10% in most cases. Occasionally they tie, but I do mean ocassionally...

Also, 6600GT is stronger in games with heavy use of DX9 features (lots of PS2.0, etc.) than last gen DX9 cards.
