the things a beast, and i like it.. Ive only had it a few days and im worried about how hot it runs in 2D mode.
The fan doesnt seem to come on in 2D mode, and it gets way hot.. I'll hit it with a temp gun when i get it back from my buddy.. If i start up something thats 3D like a game or just a winamp plugin, the fan comes on and it actually runs cooler, quite a bit cooler to the touch.

Is it normal for it to get really hot in 2D mode?
If it gets too warm will the fan kick on in 2D mode?
anybody else gone one?

thanks
jason

ha, I just noticed that it has an onboard temp probe.. very cool..

it would be nice if there were some fan controls to go along with it..
the core slows down at 140C.. that seems pretty warm to me.. its hovering around 70C as i type this..

Not too many people have these (NV35, we hardly knew ye :( )

But I think there are fan controls somewhere in the drivers for that stuff. Either that, or just turn the 2d clock speed WAY down. I mean, you don't need 2d clock speed for anything, do you? (I get 106fps scrolling MS Word! I pwn jou! )

I'm sure I remember reading that the 5800 had adjustable 2d and 3d clock speeds.... Did you scour the screen properties applet looking for something? Maybe try coolbits?

FX5800 is a good card for today's games. Well, an OK card, it certainly had it's design flaws. That's why the 5900 came out so quickly afterwards. Also kinda kills the resell value on your card. :(

in case anybody is looking to do the same.. keep the card cool in 2D..

it doesnt like it if you take the memory below 400mhz.. you can take the core down to 100mhz..
doesnt seem to have any side effects like that.. windows is still plenty snappy..
buildin a new computer up soon with a case that has a ton better cooling than the one im using now, and its aluminum.. so hopefully with that setup there shouldnt be a prob..

thanks for the help

Yeah, a lot of them do. See, what synapse02 fails to realize is that it's GTaudiophile's money, and he can decide whether he wants to buy synapse02 a FX5800 or a Radeon 9800 XT.

But if you can eBay it for the price of a 9800XT\Pro that performs better, why not?

I had a 5800 I ran at Ultra speeds, liked it a lot. nVidia did you no favors in regard to re-sale, but that thing is pretty much a collectors item.

140 celcius? You gotta be kidding!! Would that pretty much melt the PCB or something?

If it is true it no wonder Nvidia placed an external exhaust on that card, getting that kind of heat tossed into a case would not be good!

Maybe he means 140F. 140C is beyond the boiling point of water...that is hot! CPUs dont even run that hot.

yeah.. that didnt seem right to me.. i guess i could check it against the temp gun when i get it back..

normally it runs around 65C according to the onboard probe.. that 140C is just when it issues a warning..

When I went from a Geforce 2Ti to a Geforce 4 4600, man did I notice a temperature increase. My case temps went up quite a bit with that sucker in there and it started causing my chip to overheat. Running UT 2003 would cause my system to reboot after a short while because my XP 2400 was hitting 60C. Had to go out and get some 4000 rpm fans. Even with those in there cranked all the way up and my volcano all the way up, it'll still over heat if my room is warm. The nice side effect is that the computer heats my room up nice. Now that it's getting cold out, when my old man is being cheap and won't turn the heat up, I just close the door to my room, fire up the compy and play a few rounds of UT. Makes my room 3-5 degrees warmer.
