FX55 now or Conroe later?

I'm new to the computer enthusiast field, and I read alittle about the new Conroe cards that are set to come out soon. However, I'm in the process of assembling my rig now and I have the option of buying my friend's AMD Athlon 64 fx55 for around $250.00. I intend to use this computer primarily for paying next-gen games such as Oblivion and Crysis. While it is not set into stone, the basic components will look something like the following:

Chipset - ?

MoBo - Asus A8r32 Mvp deluxe (if i get the FX55)

Video Card - Sapphire x1900xt

Memory - 2 x 1Gb of undecided

Storage - approx. 50Gb of undecided

My Question is a two pronged one:

1. How will the Conroe compaire to the new AM2 and socket 939 (FX55) chipsets in both price, and preformance?

2. Should I just cave in and get the FX55, which I'm told will satisfy my needs for what I'm going to be doing with the system?

-Any input would be greatly appreciated

Why not wait until possibly tomorrow when benchmarks for Conroe are supposed to come out....?

That would probably be a smart idea LoL. I wasn't aware that they were comming out so soon. Any word on the expected price though?

Just a couple of months ago, I purchased the FX-60 939 as an upgrade from a Newcastle 3500+ and I'm very happy with the performance of the FX series chips. As for your upgrade choice, I seriously don't think you will be disappointed either way. Besides with Intel or AMD procs, there will always be something better down the road. That's the beauty of competitive innovation. :)

I think you should wait as well. In the end, if the rumors about Conroe are true (meaning the retail samples are as good as the Engineering Samples), then you will probably want to get a Conroe. An E6600 overclocked will easily outperform not only the FX-55 but the FX-60 and FX-62.

FX55 really isn't worth it. In a couple weeks AMD will have dropped their prices so much that you might as well get a 3500+ venice, overclock it to FX55 speeds, and have tons of money left over.

Or, at least I think so...

Or get an X2/Conroe. Single core is useful enough right now but we should see a big push to multi-threaded games soon.

you could get a 3200+ and oc it that high as well. I don't think the ocing potential of the 3500+ is any greater than that of the 3200+

Definitely wait. In a week conroe and huge price drops will ensue.

first of all you're going to get benchmarks in 1 day, second isnt fx55 single core? thirdly why invest in old tech?
