fx5200 better than a 9700 pro....?

...in Counter-strike? I just sold my 9700 Pro and am temporarily using a 5200 I had lying around. I get a consistent 100 fps...and it never drops except for ocassionally in thick smoke. I used to get huge frame rate drops with my 9700 Pro on this exact same setup. I've heard people having issues with ATI cards and CS...is this all it is? I've tried Cat 4.2 and 4.3 but it still does the exact same thing. Does ATI ever plan on fixing this...because it's obviously a driver problem if a 5200 outperforms a 9700 Pro on the exact same game/setup.

Anybody else noticed this?

Do you have TruForm enabled on your 9700? AA? AF? Higher res? Did you use OGL or D3D? Does the 5200 default to a lower smoke complexity?

I don't know if I had TruForm enabled. No AA or AF...don't even think CS supports it. I always use opengl at 800 x 600 ...and the smoke comlexity is maxed out. The smoke had very little to no effect on my 9700 Pro...but Statsme and other server mods really screwed with my fps. The 5200 stays pretty much locked at 100 fps even when a lot is going on...except for smoke of course.

Anybody else had this problem? Would going back to an older version of ATI's drivers possibly help?

The new ATI drivers are buggy, they cause programs all over the place. The current cream of the crop are the Catalyst 3.7s. Try those and see what happens.

I don't know what the hell you're running that causes the new ATI drivers to freak out...I constantly see people bitch and moan about new Catalyst drivers...I have not had a problem with any since like 3.8...

CS supports both AA & AF, but you have to enable them via the card's drivers.

Don't know what to say about your 9700P dipping below your 5200. I'd shoot the Catalyst team a bug report, if you have the time.

lol Russian roulette hey well you can come over and I can teach you all you want. Just bring your revolver and a nice shiny bullet and we can start practicing. 🙂 Jokes

Basically you put one bullet into the revolver and you press the trigger hoping that the bullet is not there because the revolver usually has 5 or 6 or whatever number of wholes i it. And you keep going until either the guy's brains are blown on the wall or he tells you what you came for.
