can't afford fx-60so i'll have to settle for less. the amd x2 4800 toledo or fx 57? i'd like to game and some encoding software, also i'd like a fast boot and shut down time and occasional dvd ripping to hard drive. no overclocking. what are the temperature differences in these 2 processors

the x2 gets my vote, because is marginally cheaper and Dual-core is definitely definitely shine in encoding application (as you mentioned)

forget about the fx 57,dual cores are the way to go,also the 4800+ is a waste
of money,the 3800+ can be overclocked easily to 4800+ speeds.If you don't
wanna overclock get the 4400+,the performance loss from the 4800+ is minimal
and it's ridiculous to pay 500$ for it.

this guy's right....even if you don't overclock, the price-performance doesn't justify the extra money.....if you STRONGLY want to get the top end, then go for the X2 4800+

The temperature difference is pretty big.....i'm guessing around 5-10C if you put both cores to their limits.

btw, you mention that you like a fast boot time and shut down time....maybe it might be worth it (depending if you'd like to wait a min or so longer when encoding) to downgrade the cpu to like a 4400+ (or if i were you, a 4200+, since that is probably the best deal excluding the 3800+....extra cache doesn't offer much better performance) and get like 2x1024mb of ram and an optional good hard drive (like a raptor or something)....

thanks for info i'm kinda leaning towards 4800 over fx60 not worth the 400$ difference for 200mhz increase

4800+ FTW. With a Scythe Shogun on my 4800 i get about 32 idle and never go above 38 on load. the 4800+ also allows me to rip two dvds at the same time while doing various scanning programs like registry, spyware, etc and I dont notice any slowdowns at all.

Well when you can run a 165 at stock volatages just as fast as that 4800 why do you not want to do it? Im curious.

Well, if you arent into overclocking and want either of the two FX-57 or 4800 X2) I'd personally go with the 4800 since the new pricing list just came out. But thats just me.

If you want to overclock then the 3800 X2 or Opty 165 is the better way to go cost vs performance. Can get the speed and performance of the higher chips but far less expensive.

I can't help but chime in. If you want me to go to hell, I'll understand :p

FX-57 = $820
X2 4800+ = $630

You could upgrade your core for $885:

DFI Ultra-D...$120
X2 3800+.....$295
G.Skill 2GBxx...$200
7800GT...$270

You'll also need a quality psu either way you go...

You'll get a good solid year or so until AM2 arrives....

Or
DFI Infinity $85
Opty 165 $270-299
Value Ram 2x 512 $80
evga 7800 gt $270-300
------------
$705-765

Dont spend to much money on a board when a new platform is coming out (AM2)
AM2 will use DDR2 so dont spend a ton of money there.
You could step up the 7800 to a 7900 when it released.

Add a case $100
And a good PSU $100

You have the whole box for $905 or a little less than an Fx-57.

Of all the tasks you mentioned only gaming will get any significant speed up from having 1MB/core caches. Personally I'd recommend going for the 4200+ since it's so damn cheap (350 dollars). The 4600+ has a 9% clock speed advantage which translates to around 5-7% performance but costs $200 more. Even if you game a lot you're better off saving some cash and just buying an X1900 XTX rather than spending so much on the CPU. If you can afford to buy everything and dont mind only getting something like a 10% performance increase from going for the 4800+ (for around $300 more) then by all means go for it but since I like saving cash I'd take the cheaper CPU any day.

Fair enough. I have not heat problems while overclocked and most will agree with me. If the warranty is important then I wouldnt overclock. Odds are if you dont have a problem in the first couple weeks you will never have a problem. Whatever you do go dual core and get a good video card.
