FX series vs Athlon 64

An FX-53 is the same clock speed as an Athlon 64 4000+. If I'm not mistaken they also have 1MB off cache. WTF is the point of the FX series then? I guess nothing matches an FX-55 yet, but a 4200+ sure will be the same??? dunno

The FX chips have unlocked multipliers, as any search would have quickly told you. They're also probably the highest speed bins, so theoretically they should OC better.

At stock, they perform exactly the same as an Athlon64 with the same clock speed and L2 cache. Basically they're just not a good deal unless you're into extreme overclocking and have a lot of money to burn.

The FX'es are mainly there to be the "extreme end" of their lines.

Hey! Not so fast.

I have an FX-55, and i've convinced myself that the extra $300 is due to a solid gold core which executes instructions more efficiently than a mere Athlon 64's, as it runs an advanced algorithm derived from coded messages that can only be intercepted by the Hubble telescope in the 8th phase of Jupiters 21st moon.

At least that's how I justify the price to myself.

That's my story and i'm sticking to it.

Oh yeah, and the FX-55 runs at 104Watts. For those times that the heating in the house goes out ... or the oven goes on the fritz ... or when the lighter runs out of butane.

You guys aren't looking at the bigger picture here. It's much more than just a CPU ...

mine makes a lot less heat, therefore it isnt as effective at being a heater but i seriously couldnt justify the price, sure its fast but for that money a second PCI-e card would let you run SLI, which would be a lot faster than a CPU upgrade at high res

If I run cool n' quiet it calms down, but at stock speed, i'm topping out at 70C according to ASUS (which I am pretty sure is off).

At any one time there's only 1 Athlon FX available. The FX-55 replaced the FX-53, and AMD doesn't make FX-53s anymore. Instead, they're upward locking the multiplier and calling it a A64 4000+. When the FX-57 comes along they might do the same and call the current FX-55 the 4200+ or something.
