FX not work in older motherboards?

I have an Asus A7M266 (AMD/VIA chipset) and AMD Althon 1.4ghz (T-bird).

I just ordered a new system but the video card arrived first, so I thought I would try it on the old system, it doesn't work! Is this normal, do these new FX cards need a newer motherboard? It's only AGP 4x does it need AGP 8X or something?

Oh I should say that the DOS screen looks ok but soon as WinXP boots up the screen is seriously garbled, then when it tries to find the new drivers it thinks for a few minutes, then the screen goes black and the system locks up (I guess, it just stays on a black screen and I have to whap the reset button).

I think I figured it out. Had to disable AGP Fast Write. God damn VIA garbage! This is exactly why I'm going back to Intel and permanently.

That's VIA's fault, not AMD, and VIA make chipsets for both AMD and Intel motherboards, so you're not safe unless you get an Intel proc and mobo 😛

Well, really it's your fault, since most of the time Fastwrites is disabled in the beginning, so you must have enabled it 😛

Glad you fixed it though.

yes, you can always buy a great plattform as Nforce2 and enjoy. We all know VIA is quite problematic.

That's what I meant. I knew Fast Writes had problems with VIA but I never had a problem with it enabled on this board before and I've been thru 2 other Nvidia boards, a GF2 GTS and GF3 Ti500.

Actually this mobo has an AMD 760 northbridge (AGP). AMD, VIA, whatever, it's all crap. I hear the Nforce2 is nice true dat.... but with Intel you never have to worry.
