FX 6300 with Asrock mobo for $175 good for general desktop use?

Hey all, my parents want to upgrade from a 7 year old dual core E2160 (Intel CPU just before a C2D), and i was thinking of getting this bundle which is a FX 6300 and Asrock mobo for them for $175 (already have 8GB RAM, an old 9800GT, and all other components). here's the link:

http://ncix.com/products/?sku=83816...WMHKBOX&manufacture=Bundle Deals&promoid=1337

My parents are in their 60s and just need a desktop for general use, no gaming or video editing or anything like that, so i think that's the best route yea? The i5s and i3s are too overpriced for their needs, correct?

Edit: oh one thing to add, this computer will be the host for a network of 2 other computers, so it'll be like a mini server. The 2 other computers are also for general desktop use.

I see NCIX has i3 3220 + motherboard bundles for $190 USD. A 6300 is complete overkill for them, if you want to keep it cheap and go AMD then an FX-4300 should be more than enough for them. Doesn't sound like they need a hexa core for their purposes. I doubt that they will really even notice the difference between the i3 and the FX for general use.

The system you are describing will be more than sufficient for their use. However an i3, Pentium, or and apu would also be a good choice. With any of these you would not need the 9800 gt, so you would save power and not have to buy a replacement dgpu should the 9800gt go belly-up.

Personally, for their use case, I would just go with a Pentium or even celeron, or a mid series amd apu.
Do you have a windows license? If not you might be better off just to buy a pre-built from dell or Lenovo outlets. No hassles and a warranty in case something goes wrong.

Heck, even a Celeron G1610 is going to be enough for casual use. In all cases I'd recommend getting a CPU with integrated GPU. Your parent have zero use for a 9800GT (other then drive up power consumption), and even an integrated HD2500 can handle video decoding better.

I recently revived my dad's old C2D system with a RAM upgrade and a solid state drive. It feels like a brand new machine now. A motherboard/processor replacement may not be necessary - especially if you can find a faster Core2 that is compatible for their board for the right price. Clean install of windows on SSD + RAM bump + ebay Core2 might be more economical and may even feel faster than a 6300 on a mechanical hard drive.

good points! yea i was debating the 9800gt, its from a very old build but its already 5 years old and these things don't last forever... i was just looking at the bundle deals here in Canada, so the FX-6300 stood out as the cheapest. It'll be a mini server as my father still has his own small business (run from his office @ home), so i want a CPU with a little punch if need be. Ideally i could get integrated graphics, just don't see any bundled deals here....

Not saying this isn't a good price based on historical prices but it's not a good value.

When I put together an AM3+ rig, I go $50-60 on the mobo and try to keep it under $80 on the proc. Overpaid a little recently on an 8150 but it came with the AMD water cooler system ($150 ebay)

Just snagged an X6 1055t for $73. Again ebay.

Intel has the mindshare right now, everyone wants it. That means there are incredible values to be had on the AMD side if you wait for the right deal.

The 8150 and 1055T are bother horribly slow CPU's and I wouldn't use them if you paid me to use them. That isn't a deal.

To the OP, G1610 + Asrock B75 board. Cheaper and faster than AMD's cheapest APU - the A4 4000.

Are you on crack? Horribly slow compared to what?

A) have you ever used one?
B) have you ever overclocked one?

My 8150 @ 4.4GHz doesn't feel slow. And I imagine the 1055t @ 3.2 GHz won't either.

ETA: OP, this is exactly the attitude I was referring to. These people will almost give you an AM3+ rig just to get it out of their house.

Unbelievable! Slow CPU's? Did your parents drop you on the floor when you were little? Or is this just a joke?

Wow, slow cpu's, since when. If you had a modern Intel and Amd systems side by side I doubt you could tell the difference when running as a casual use/gaming computer.

I love how folks act like AMD is slower than molasses in January.

Like I said, it's good for the OP if he's willing to lowball people. I got a 990fx board for $60 here, this week. Name brand, too.

There can be good values in bad product lines. Just like there were in the P4 days. How many people had a 2.4c @ 3.2? I did.

actually found a matx FM2 mobo for $60 and the 5600k for $99, so thats $160 and comes with integrated graphics, so that's it! For $160 it'll be brand new, last for years to come, and will be totally fine for general desktop use. Anything better than that?

Thanks for advice on AM3+, but i got rid of mine 2 years ago, lol. Don't really care to go to ebay and hunt for old used parts, the Gigabyte FM2 and 5600k are best new products for price to performance in general desktop yea?

Only if you need low-mid range integrated graphics.

Brand new is overrated.

yes well, I would avoid using an old "higher end" vga for something like this (unnecessary heat, possible source of noise and unreliability)
even Intel IGPs makes more sense... the 5600K looks good enough, if you want to save some money maybe a Celeron G1610 + B75 would be more than enough, and it's like $100 for both on newegg.

If the motherboard has a video ports that you can use then it should work. The memory is ddr3 so your old dd2 ram might not work here.

To touch on this, there are FM2 chips that aren't APUs. As I understand it with one of those chips on board video would be dead.

yes, but these are sold as "Athlon", no "Ax", the same also applies to FM1..

using DDR2 would limit your choices to Phenom II and Core 2 Quad.

Better IGP too. (2500 versus 2000).

"Better" is in single digit percentages here, both are equally slow, but the 2500 at least has DX11 level features. Not that you're going to be able to actually use them... :whiste:

Both will handle general desktop use and video decoding just fine though...
