FX-55 processor to run completely stable at 2.8 GHz

It is my first try to OC my computer. It's new thing to me and I'd like to do it with your help guys.

I've got new PC:

CPU - FX55
RAM - 2GB (2x 1GB) Samsung I think
ASUS Deluxe
PSU - OCZ 420W

I've read the article about overclocking and I sort of understand it but I could use your help anyway. 😉

What would be the best way to OC FX-55 to 2.8GHz ??

Review that claims it can run completely stable at 2.8Ghz

I understand that it depends on parts. Now I run my CPU with

FSB frequency 210 Mhz
Multiplier 13.0
CPU voltage 1.650

That gives me 2.7GHz and CPU temperature is 60C . Is voltage too high? Is temperature 65C too high when I run prime95?

I tried to find what frequency is RAM running but I could not find anything in the BIOS. I there a way to adjust ram frequency on ASUS A8V deluxe REv.2 ? If I undestand it right I should set my RAM to 210MHz as well in order to make it work bewst with CPU. Only think I've found was DDR voltage which is 2.6V now.

I should get better performance when I increase FSB together with multiplier instead of using just multiplier. Is that right? Is that true even if my RAM is possibly running at 200MHz?

Any suggestion or help with OC this setup effectively?

1) 65C is borderline for heat I would try and get an aftermarket heatsink. Wouldn't want to fry that fancy CPU would you.
2)1.65 volts seems to high for a 100mhz increase to me those votages might be too much for that stock cooler.
3)If you can get the ram higher by decreasing the multiplier you might see a slight increase not very much though. The high FSB is not a big deal because A64's are not bandwith starved so just increasing the multiplier should be fine.
4) Maybe you just a bad chip because with OCing YMMV this could explain the bad OC.

you dont need fsb to oc an fx55 its unlocked. leave fsb at 200, change the multiplier to 14, I believe default voltage is 1.5 for fx55, set the voltage to 1.55. it should oc fine like that. btw your temps are messed up, is the heatsink properly installed ?

FSB at 200 and multiplier 14 doesn't work. It freezes in windows. I tried x13 and it seems to work now.

I've lowered CPU voltage and I'm getting lower temperatures. 60C MAX under Prime95 torture test (3. one max heat... ) Should I be still concerned about this level of heat?

What about DDR voltage? Is 2.6V enough when OC?

Thanks guys for hleping us.. 😎

you have an amd 64 anything above 55C-56C is a nono. I reccomend you invest in an xp-120 or something cus you don't want to run a $750+ cpu hot enough to fry. I have an amd 64 3200+ stock 2.0 at 240 x10 so I'm running at 2.4 and my temps are around 52C. The thing with fx and 64 cpu's is the higher the fsb the better the performace. so try dropping the multi by 1 and see if you can squeeze an extra 20mhz from your ram. That would give your better performance and make your oc more powerful overall. the lower your cpu volts the lower your temps. I run my ddr at 2.9 so add more volts as you increase the speed. 2.6 is not enough for overclocking test each level of your oc for about an hour than raise it up about 50 mhz or add 5mhz the the fsb that should help you find a happy medium between temp, mhz speed, and performance

I will try to reinstall the heatsink. If that will not help to bring the temperatures down is xp-120 best thing to get as far as air cooling goes fo FX-55?

Problem with the xp-90 and xp-120 is you need a fan too to blow on the heatsink so that's another thing you have to worry about and pay for. Get the all copper or al/cu zalman heatsink/fan combo and you should be good to go. It's a good bang for your buck.

i still dont get it, it should work with a 14multi .. what mb are you using ?

I'm using ASUS A8V Deluxe. When I use 14 multiplier it will freeze in windows. I think my main problem is heat sink. I don't have any other explanation for 56C idle at 2600MHz, but unfortunately I don't have thermal paste here rigt now.

well again I'll say this 55C is to hot to run an fx at LOAD. drop your volts a little until you get a new heatsink/fan and thermal paste. it is not a good idea to run it that hot. I set my system to shut itself off at 60C cus it's to hot. you may wanna look into water cooling but get your temps DOWN. you don't wanna fry your cpu

For such an expensive investment, it would be a very good small investment to purchase the best aircooling solution you can find for around 60$ including a tube of at least Artic Ceramiqué. You need to be sure of each an every of the components you are trying to overclock.

Firstly: Your ram. Keep everything at stock and run memtest86 2x. If everything is good, raise your fsb by 10mhz and lower your cpu multiplier by .5 or 1. Increase ram voltage to 2.70V. Run Memtest. etc. until you find the highest fsb your ram can do under probably less than 2.85V. I wouldnt go any higher unless you had OCZ or company ram that allowed you to go higher and keep the warantee.

Secondly: Northbridge: Is this getting too hot? If it does, your OC goes nowhere. You might have to replace the Northbridge cooling.

Thirdly: CPU: Obviously you know what to do. If default voltage is 1.5V I wouldnt go much above 1.65V

I know it is probably too late now, but the neo2 is really the best choice for overclocking athlon 939 cpus 🙂

Thanks guys. New Thermalright-XP-120 + Quiet Panaflo 120mm L1A is on the way. It should take care of temperatures. Until I get that no OC for me.

Ohh.. Is it good idea to use thermal paste that comes with XP-120 or should I get Arctic Siver Ceramique Thermal Compound instead?
