fx-55 or xeon 3ghz

been out of the cpu scene for a while so sorry if this is a dumb question. which chip is better assuming everything else is the same.

well actually the fx-55 system im going to build, if its the xeon its gonna be a dell precision 670 workstation.

so does the fx55 blow away the xeon like id guess??

 
I'd be happy with either, but if performance is the same, I'd personally choose the AMD because it is easier to keep cool under load.

What graphics card are you getting? Wildcat?

a 2.6 Ghz K8 against a 3 Ghz xeon ?

a 2Ghz athlon 64 is more then equel to a 3 Ghz xeon, nevermind a 2.6Ghz one.

FX-55 I think if I remember correctly from the benchmarks. It should toast a 3.8 xenon.
 
The 3.8 with the D0 stepping opened up the gap between intel and AMD. AMD still holds the top for gaming, but the p4 blows it away in any other application. But that's ONLY for the 3.8, anything below is just toasted by AMD.

I thought the xeon only won in some server catagory and the rest were generally even... wait your talking about p4, not even part of the question.
 
Well, does FX even have a PCI-Express based board yet? If not, then you will need to go Intel based or step down to AGP.

I see it this way, My FX-55 is at 3Ghz and I know it would beat the 3Ghz Xeon in ALMOST anything, so you need a 4Ghz Xeon which Im sure would costs $650+ if there was such a thing.

EDIT: I just loaded up the newegg link to the 3Ghz xeon. Look to the right at the prices for the motherboards that were bought with that chip...$350+$432=$782. I think paying $900-$1000 for an FX-55 with motherboard is worth the $200-$300 over the Xeon.

nForce4 boards for socket 393 are starting to show up. Unless he wants socket 940, he can have PCI-E now.
 
yeah the fx55 v the xeon isn't even pretty. it blows the xeon away.

the chip is a lot of money though. you'd prob also do well to get a s939 90nm 3000 and overclock it. you could prob get it to 2.6. also cad is something that uses multiple cores. so you mgiht also do better with 2 slower cores. 2 slower opterons. but you can't beat the fx55 though, its the fastest x86 chip in teh world.

tyan is comming out with an NF4 dual board. check the arstechnica.com "GOD BOX" for some suggestions on dual amd's. also check the HOT ROD for some suggestions on single cihps.
 
idk workstation right? dosent the intel processors do math a lot faster than amd processors. i always thought
AMD=game oriented
Intel=Workstation oriented.
 
what kind of math? is it floating point math or integer math? amd is exceptionally fast with both of them.

games use tons of math as well. graphics is very math oriented. games also use AI which is very math oriented.

so games and autocad (an engineering app) aren't necessarily all that different. right now AMD beats INTEL in productivity apps, workstation apps and games.
 
opterons rule. anyway, im referring to the benchmarks, the encoding/decoding, algorithim heavy apps seem to always go to the intel processors. probably cause a 3500+ is clocked at 3.5ghz like a intel P4

Ummm....

If you mean 3500+ as In A64 3500+ Its not running at 3.5Ghz, the 3500+ runs at 2.2Ghz.
 
yeah thats what i mean.they dont actually work at 3.5ghz so im guessing thats why the 64s perform at lower than a p4 at 3.46 cause they have less clocks to calcualate. which means a similarly labled a64 shouldnt be as fast as a p4 in pure math calculations and algorithim heavy calculations.
 
I think the biggest issue is what operating system your going to be running. If its windows based then you should probably get a dual HT xeon setup if your not going to be gaming. This will give you essentially the performance of maybe 3 physical procs ( 2 are physical and 2 are logical and the 2 logis will probably give you the performance of 1 extra phisical which isn't that much because its all about your APP )

If its Linux your going to be going for then your a fool not to go with a Dual Opteron Setup with a nice AGP Quadro. Run kernel 2.6 so you get better SMP performance with the oppies. You won't ever be disapointed. By the time it gets slow you will need a new system anyways. Upgrading is usually futile at the professional level.

Just don't do Dual Xeon on Linux especially with HT. It really blows even in 2.6 kernel. I run multiple servers and all a dual xeon is good for is intensive I/O and you need a good scsi drive for that. adding HT only bogs things down in linux.

If this is going to be a gaming rig at any level then you need to grab the FX series once the new PCI-E mobos come out.
