FX-55 cpu with Artic Cooling Freezer 64 pro... 44'C idle in bios.

as the title states, I have a FX-55 from NewEgg, running on an Asus A8N-E with an AC Freezer 64 pro...at stock speed should it run at 44'C idle? Seems kinda high especially considering the hsf is rated pretty well and I am using Artic Silver 5.

just wanted to check because I wanted to O/C it to 2.8-2.9ghz

the hsf is a b!tch to put on in the antec case I am using... and I check to make sure it is seated properly. case has 80mm front, 120mm rear, 80mm side and dual 80mm in PSU. room temp is about 74'F

That is fairly high. I have that same heatsink on my 110w X2 4400, and it idles @31C, and I've got Cool n Quiet turned off. Of course, I also don't let the motherboard control the fan speed; it runs full-blast at all times.

I have the same CPU and heatsink/fan as you do except they're on an Abit KN8 Ultra. I'm currently running at 2.8GHz 1.44v and idle temp is 34C (don't know what the temps are at default but I would say they are much lower than 34C.

update.... when I look in PC Wizard 2006 it shows my temp at 33'C...the Bios is the only thing registering 44'C

Niether. Don't trust temperatures, only trust stability.

First take the heatsink off and make sure it is making good contact with the processor (i.e. a good layer of TIM on the heatsink base).

Then if there is and you can pass dual prime for a couple of hours I wouldn't really worry. If your computer restarts or it fails, then you have a problem.

If you do have a problem after this, you can try running it naked (taking off the IHS), which usually brings temps down 10 or so degrees, or if you can calibrate the thermo like on the DFI LanParty Expert.

Sorry I do not know if you can I have only used the LanParty for AMD.

Also remember that Windows sends a HLT command to the CPU when it is idle, the BIOS does not. BIOS temperatures are always higher than Windows idle temperatures.

QFT my bios idle temps are always 5 or so degrees higher than idle in windows.

Have you allowed the Artic Silver to cure? I am using the same HSF on my 3800X2 @ 2.6Ghz, and with both cores loaded 100% I only get to 46C. When I first installed my HSF my idle temps were around 37-38C. After running the computer for 3 days straight then powered off to cool down, my idle temps dropped to 33-34C. Another thing to keep in mind is that most reviews recommend you use the Artic Cooling MX paste with this heatsink. It is usually 1-3C cooler then Artic Silver.
