FX-4170, overclocked to the max. Do a head to head comparison with the Core i5 3570K just for the fun of it. 😛

I'm leaning towards the 4170 for the simple fact that i could play with it and overclock it. How would a 5Ghz 4170 compare against a 3.4Ghz IB DC?

They would be about the same, while the BD would consume a mST of power.
It's fun to OC, and it sucks being locked to stock, but IMO, the BD just isn't worth it.

Slower than a Pentium G620. I have owned all of these CPUs.

Get the i3 2100.

One: it doesn't overclock stably to 5GHz. Two: power consumption would be 2-3x higher overclocked. Three: stock it's slower than the i3. Four: if you want to overclock you need a motherboard with at least a 6+2 phase power delivery. Five: you also need an aftermarket air cooler to overclock.

Because of reasons 4 and 5, the cost of the CPU is around $70 higher than getting a Core i3. And if you're willing to pay that much, by that point you can get a Core i5 which will be faster than the 4170 whether it's overclocked or not.

Don't waste your money on an FX because it doesn't make sense no matter how you look at it. If you want stock, get an i3. If you want to overclock the FX, run a stock Core i5 instead.

I purchased a i3-2100 in Jan 2011 for my brother's computer. It has been rock solid and very fast. In daily operation there is no difference compared to my 2500k overclocked. It would be interesting to go A8 so you get the 6550 equivalent integrated GPU with the chip. It would blow the HD2000 out of the water.

I'd throw a A8-3870K in the ring for a wild card. $120 and it includes a nice GPU for light gaming. Seems like they will overclock to around 3.7-3.8Ghz without much fuss. Performance is about on par with the 4-core Bulldozer chips at that point. I doubt she would need anything more powerful than that.

What does she use the computer for?

Don, you can have an FX6100 at e-bay for as low as $120.00.
6-Threads plus unlocked to OC, that is much better than any i3 IMO.

Talked to my contact in Hong Kong and he's going to see if he can get me a Core I3 3240. Said expect it to be around 150 but i'd much rather just get an IB DC

I'm curious, you said it will be replacing a Mac, so are you making a hackintosh? That may change a lot of the suggestions, such as an Intel CPU is easier.

FX. Support the underdog.
For what? For sending their marketing people here to lie to us? For hyping Bulldozer to the moon only to release a turd? For the shenanigans in the Video forum? For their blatant disrespect of the enthusiast community? I could go on...

I used to love AMD but their recent nonsense has turned me off of them as a company. I will only support them in the future if they offer compelling products for a good price.

OP go with Ivy, it will save you a lot on your power bill over time and will be better overall as well.

Whats the score with the IB i3? I assume they are making them now as you can get one.

FX 4170 because it'd be fun to play with OC'ing wise. She won't notice the difference between either in performance.

Meh, who cares? It's too slow for an overclock to mean anything to begin with.

With the investment you have to make for OCing hardware, you can just run a stock Core i5 and enjoy higher performance and much lower power consumption.

The i3 at stock will beat anything AMD makes for certain basic usage patterns like this, unfortunately. I'm pretty sure that it will win in gaming as well. 🙁

Hey! They gave us "native quad cores" dammit! #respect

/sarcasm

Why not Llano? It would probably be much more suited for a mid-range rig. Honestly though, if it's not going to be used for anything too heavy, just get whatever is cheapest for the performance level you need.
