Idiot.

Laptops come with recovery disks.

Sure they do. That's why out of the 4 laptops my family has owned, not one of them has come with recovery disks.I think the 2 dells came with recovery partitions and my old fujitsu laptop had a utility to make the recovery floppies. 30 floppies to backup windows 95.

the recovery disk is usually a hidden partition on the harddisk (not that it does much godd if you upgrade the harddisk)

ok it seems like I was wrong. I apologize. I reformatted while i was away at college but I'm at my parents home for the week and I just went into the attic and for some reason my dad saved the box that my laptop came in. I opened it up and discovered there were actually recovery discs. not as good as an actual xp cd but it's better than nothing. I'll just have to uninstall all the extra crap that came on the computer. BTW, does anyone know if I have to activate windows if I use the recovery cds?

Yes - if you've deleted the recovery partition. However just call up Microsoft they're usually pretty helpful about activating it on the same computer.

Wow, going through all this crap I just found the receipt for this computer. Purchased 12/21/02. :Q If anyone is wondering this is the Sotec 3120x deal from a few years back. Got it for $700. Upgraded the ram to 640MB and it still works great. I thought for sure this thing would die after a year.

yeah the software will tell you it's not legit cause you probablly dl'ed a regular copy of xp instead of the OEM for which your cd key is meant. there's nothing wrong with downloading a copy of xp cause you pay for the serial. however, using an OEM serial for the copy of windows you installed (unless it's and OEM copy) will make windows see your key as illegit.

I've activated windows something like 30 - 40 times. I reformat like crazy, and there was a period when my Deathstar would fail every 2 weeks - month. Even now, I've had RAM and HD failures screw up my windows installation. MS is VERY understanding. You tell them you swapped hardware or you reformatted, they will let you activate any day.

Seriously. I can understand if people are afraid at reactivating and talking to MS, but when you are on AT, I expect better.

I know if I call microsoft they won't help me out at all even though I have a nice reflective sticker on the bottom of my laptop which says "GENUINE MICROSOFT" and has a legit product key. I'll probably have to buy a new cd from them.

Just get that 6-in-1 WinXP CD image like everyone else, install WinXP Pro (or Home) OEM version, type in the serial number on the computer, done.

Don't even touch that recovery crap.
