had to reinstall windows on my laptop but since it didn't come with any type of install cds i had to use an xp cd i got online. as soon as I ran windows update I started getting all these nag screens and popups, like I was infected with malware.

I was able to delete the bullsh|t that windows update installed but microsoft has taken this too far. the software acted in everyway like a virus. as soon as i'd end the task it'd restart by itself. it even started itself in safe mode. :|

I know if I call microsoft they won't help me out at all even though I have a nice reflective sticker on the bottom of my laptop which says "GENUINE MICROSOFT" and has a legit product key. I'll probably have to buy a new cd from them.

cliffs:
laptop didn't come with an xp cd.
had to reinstall windows
downloaded an xp cd.
got pwned with malware which installed itself from the windows update site.
now i probably have to pay M$ so they'll send me an oem windows xp cd so I can use my legit key.

You must be referring to Windows Genuine Advantage. More nagging for not being genuine.

yeah.

i'm just wondering, for those of who have updated does the software run in the background even if you have a valid key? I'm afraid to install this crap on my dad's new laptop.

i never said i didn't like xp. plus, considering it's already paid for, I shouldn't have to pay for it again.

I like how you can order the Win XP CD for an extra $10 when you buy a Dell notebook.

Not after a certain number of weeks. I don't remember exactly but it was probably something like 6 weeks.

I know my dell didn't come with a CD, but it had a shortcut in the start menu to burn the right windows CD with.

That's the default system recovery tool, it's preinstalled on all Dells.

can you in the US purchase an OEM copy of windows with a single piece of hardware like a Harddisk or CPU?

We can here in Australia, which is what I did, each time I went and bought a Harddisk for the local computer store I paid an extra AU$190 and bought a legit copy of XP PRO OEM...now I have about 10 of the buggers and I Don't have to worry about WGA and any sort of sh!t like that.

Not sure about your laptop, but my Sony has windows pre-installed, and all it takes is a couple of keystrokes to re-load it from the HDD. IIRC, it's permanently store there in it's own partition, as a recovery sector, that SUPPOSEDLY can't be corrupted...heh-heh...sure...
Anyway, when I bought this one, it had been the store display model, so I got a screaming good buy on it. I don't remember just what I had to do, something like F8 at boot, and it went into recovery mode...gave the option of a reformat, or just reinstall/repair windows...pretty simple on this machine...

So get an OEM WinXP CD from your friendly local sysadmin.

Since I have one, I always reformat OEM PCs and install a CLEAN copy of Windows, using the key that came with the machine.

Sure they do. That's why out of the 4 laptops my family has owned, not one of them has come with recovery disks.I think the 2 dells came with recovery partitions and my old fujitsu laptop had a utility to make the recovery floppies. 30 floppies to backup windows 95.
