This seems so easy to trace. so...-other than this being a big hassle and causing you headaches as you straighten it out, you shouldn't be out the money in the long run.

Unfortunately it is not that difficult. Every check you write typically has most of the information theives need to do this. Sorry to hear about this.
 
It could have been a simple typo. If your account number is similar to someone else's at that institution, say just two numbers transposed, the person could have just typed it wrong and not noticed. I work at a large credit union and I see errors of this type pretty much daily. People give out their account number incorrectly and it matches someone else here, boom the debit posts to the wrong account. So, think it through a bit more before you jump directly to theft. There are very few systems in place to verify that any given debit is being posted to the correct account in the ACH/EFT system.
