Why would you go to Cuba for a honeymoon?
It's fairly cheap.

But the hidden fees are a bitch, huh?
Yeah, plus there's always that lingering doubt as to whether you'll get siezed in the airport and held on trumpted up charges for political disruption or something.

Yep.

Next time, do Hawaii. If you REALLY want to do the Caribbean, stick with St Thomas or St John.

A friend of our family was visiting some friends in Cuba, very recently. He was at his friend's house (hut) in one of the small villages. While he was there, they changed the laws and foreigners were no longer allowed to travel outside of the major cities. When he left the country, they tried to put him in jail for breaking the law, which he had found out about at that moment. They interviewed him for almost an hour, asking all kinds of questions about where he was, who he was with, etc... He wasn't suprised too much that they knew every detail of his trip, but he was suprised that the custom's agent had access to that info as he was trying to leave the country.

Communism in theory is wonderful, in practice though... it's complete crap.

/que Amused.

I got nothing really to add. Whether or not you think the concept is wonderful, it is true the practice is "complete crap."

Why argue when he's right?

Because you like it.

Not as much, lately. I've been dropping out of a lot of threads simply because it's not worth my time. Especially if it's a nice day outside and my Hog is calling to me to ride her. 😀

Aruba was absolutely beautiful and the people there are some of the most friendly and helpful people I've ever been around.

Um... that's like going "dude, I went to the Philipines and I got fvcking kidnapped. What the fvck. Who the fvck kidnaps an AMERICAN in the Philipines and then ransoms them back for large amounts of money!?"

Honestly, you're surprised?

"Omg, I lit my finger on fire... omgwtfbbq it hurts! What the hell?! Since when does lighting yourself on fire HURT 😕"

"Wow, the light was red, but who would have thought I'd slam into other cars travelling perpendicular to myself when I floored the gas despite the red light?"

come on Skoorb... you're smarter than this!

I know what you mean, but taking out your hog and riding her conjures up an image NSFW 😛

BTW, I got pissed off yesterday. Was going to ride the Hayabusa, but the durned battery crapped out. Now I have to get a replacement. Won't hold a charge, but as you know MC batteries suck and have to be replaced more often than a car battery.

I got a battery tender. She gets hooked up every time I pull in the garage.

But yeah, I know what you mean. In all my past bikes a battery was good for 2-3 years.

I need to get one of those for the redneckmobile. Had to jump it last night to get it to start.

Yes, I realize it's not "communism", and yes I've taken that grade 10 class on why there has never been a pure communism.

Your truck looked pretty new. How old is it (and that battery)?

The battery tender is great. It has a really neat little plug that stays attached to your battery so hooking it up is a breeze. On a car, you just route the plug so it sits just inside the front grill making it easy to fish out and hook up.

I sold the truck a few months ago and picked up a Subaru Legacy since the truck was not terribly practical for where I will be living.

The "redneckmobile" in question is my 88 IROC-Z Camaro. The battery is fairly new and still had a charge, just not enough of one to turn over.

Theivery at airports isn't limited to Cuba, it happens all over and it's rampant anywhere there is a low standard of living. Just a few tips for you:
1. Don't put anything of value in you bags, if it's worth something to you, carry it on you.
2. Don't use brand new fancy looking luggage. If your bags look like crap, they'll leave it be.
3. Don't advertise that your American! If they relate you with George W, it'll be that much easier on their conscience to steal from you.
4. Put a Canadian flag on your luggage, being as their much more highly viewed by the second and third world than Americans, your less likely to be stolen from.

why would you go to Cuba?

and you didn't predict this would happen?

why don't you take an anniversary trip to south africa? or hell, how about a trip to Iraq?

What brought this up if it happened 4 years ago? And oh yeah, if you didn't know that Cuba=Bad then I don't know what to say.
Because it happened recently to her parents. I thought maybe we and her cousin just had bad luck, but with it happening to her parents too I can statistically say with certainty that communists are bastards.

I know three people that this happened to in Brazil. Fscking Democracies.

Let's blow up all the commies and capitalist pigs!

I think linking theft to political systems in this way is kinda thin cause and effect.

Reminds me of the thread about the guy who honeymooned in the Dominican Republic and they both got deathly ill from something they ate and spent thousands on horrific hospital care. I think he said the same thing.....it was cheap.

We honeymooned in Italy. 😉

So what part escaped you? Perhaps the last sentence?

Or perhaps you think Cubans are inherently more depraved because their leadership is communist than elsewhere?

Next.

(PS. Fix sarcasm meter)

You are going to a foreign country. You obey their rules, respect their political system, their leaders and their way of life. It is THEIR country. How can this be misunderstood?

So we went there for our honeymoon four years ago and the communist pigs went through our checked in luggage on the way back to Canada, relieving it of an irreplaceable watch, a camera with honeymoon pics (nothing naughty), and a pair of earrings, plus another couple of trinkets. I learned two lessons: 1) Don't check in anything of value (I've only travelled previously to good countries, and never had this problem) and 2) Communists are bad.

Mrsskoorb has a cousin who also had tons of electronics stolen from his bag on the way out, and her parents recently got back and had an electric razor taken from their luggage.

For me personally the sour feeling this gave me makes me quite uninterested in visiting that country ever again, and for any Canadian reading this and thinking about going to Cuba I feel that you should know about the thieving fvcking communists.
It happened ages ago and you feel this sudden urge to announce it now? Even your in-laws' experience seems to have no date attached to it. Is this another so-called Skoorb effect?

Anyway, supposing your story were true, it wouldn't stop me from my plans to visit Cuba before the complete industrial revolution. I have been procrastinating, but I think it should happen soon ... at least my profession should get me there some day. All your story tells me, provided true, is to be mindful of what I take with me. However, I do suspect that you're being sarcastic.

P.S. Oh yes, it wouldn't be any different from other third world nations that aren't communist. There are a lot of banditti in third world nations and corrupt government, regardless of their marketing system.

Fix humorless meter then fix overly-sensitive meter then fix self-righteous meter....they're all set WAY too high there, hoss.

Fix your everyone hates you meter. Go back to your WoW trolling.
