fvcking 220v!!!

so i've been using a 220-110v transformer quite happily the last few weeks in india for my xbox. so i plugged it in today to watch a movie, sit back on the sofa in the hotel room, and 2 seconds after turning it on, smoke comes pouring out of the power supply, and pshhht-crack. something goes kaput inside 🙁.

funny thing is the transformer is still working just fine. bah. and microsoft apparently doesn't sell xboxs here, so i'm screwed till january. 🙁 🙁 🙁

god knows....

best case scenario is its just the power supply or a fuse or something that blew...but there was a sh!tload of smoke and a nasty smell (burst cap i think). ugh. i don't care so much about the hardware.... i just don't want to lose my savegames! 🙁. before i moved i thought "maybe i should put my saves on a memory card just in case" but then i thought "meh, what could happen".

sigh... my multimeter is 2 months away in an ocean shipment...so it will be a while before i can test it to figure out exactly whats wrong. sigh.

nik, the shipment includes all our furniture etc from our house in MD, its in a 20foot container on a cargo ship. transit time + customs is about 2 months,

So buy one of those power supplies. If you can't because of the whole "we don't ship to India" thing, then paypal me the money for the power supply and shipping and I'll buy it and ship it to you. 🙂

That happens all the time here in Iraq. The guys at the CNE shop actually know exactly which cap..or it may be a fuse that blows out when that happens.

It requires surface mount soldering to fix though, or you will need a new power supply.

There does not appear to be any surface mount stuff on that board.

It appears to be a bread board.

Very easy for anyone who has soldered any board level

i'd be happy to fix it myself, but avail of quality parts in india is iffy so i'll just get a new ps.

i feel your pain, i once fried a beloved antec PSU of mine.. had to settle for something worse for a while 🙁

I'm confused, what blew up? The Xbox, or the 220 - 120 converter?

if the latter.. it took your xbox with it?

vivan-you MOVED to india, or are staying? If staying, what part? India's a strange place, especially the smell when you land on the plane. from a fellow desi, good luck! enjoy the dollar ruppee conversion-i think its at like 50 now!

Spoken like a true gamer. The console itself is fried, but all he cares about is the Saved Games. 😀

Buy one from Japan, they're selling like used condoms over there so they'll probably be pretty cheap.

They sell used condoms in japan? What do they go for? Erm, I want to know for a friend...

I'll express one for $4000 ($$$ i need for an Apple) 🙂

Apple?

Get a rope!

Get a pancake bunny?

If I'm going to be playing games or using a workstation, I want a PC. If I'm going to be editing images, movies, and music, I want a mac. It's that simple.

CMU ECE? Couldn't you just build one? Regulated Linear PowerSupplies are pretty easy to get parts for no matter where you are.
