a little over a week ago I woke up with something funny in my right foot. it was sort of stiff and hurt when I took a step. things like that have happened from time to time before, just a sort of stiff, messed up joint because I slept on it funny or something. they usually just go away within at most 24hrs.

but this this hasn't ever gone away, and it's been more than a week. almost every time I take a step with that foot it's pretty painful, so I've gotten into the habit of contorting my foot around differently when I step, so that it doesn't hurt so much. it's just something to do with how my foot bends when it steps, not my toes - I can wiggle my toes around plenty with no pain.

A buddy of mine had a stress fracture in his foot and didn't know it for about a week.

I suggest you see a doctor if it's so painful you can't step on it properly.

How old are you? Did you just get a new pair of shoes? You might have flat feet, have someone look to see if you have any arches.

didn't just get new shoes, althought the ones I have have always been uncomfortable because of lack of sole padding/support. but no, nothing changed recently except one day my foot was fine, the next it was messed up

What does it smell like? Is there an almond like odor? If there is, then it might it something I know...

ha
it smells like sweat and bacteria. I don't think I'd be able to detect a faint odor through all that crap. (I've always had unusually stinky feet)

So how old are you? Have someone check if you have any arches.

doctors tend to know more about this stuff than your typical ATOT poster.

Most likely not. If it was a problem with the metatarsals, moving the toes would cause pain. More likely, it's a plantar problem.

OP: There's this wonderful thing called a doctor. They like to help people out when their body causes them problems. I'd suggest calling one up. If it's arch or heel pain, it's probable that it's plantar fasciitis.

yeah yeah I know I'll go to a doctor. that was my first inclination, but I told my mom and she said "pfft you just inhereted that from me, you don't need a doctor"

You could be correct but speaking from personal experience, I have had at least four attacks of Metatarsalgia. Each time the pain was severe after getting up in the morning even though there was no sign of pain the day before. It was like I had been hit with a sledge hammer. In my case, the pain was limited to the 1st metatarsal and very little if any pain elsewhere on the foot.
Each time it has happened, my work boots were getting toward the end of their useful life... it was related to poor foot support. The pain would last at least a week if not more.

As for if that is what dpopiz is experiencing, I have no idea. I was merely offering him my opinion of a possibility. I agree, he should see a doctor if the pain persists.

I bet, as drnoobie stated above, that you have plantar fasciitis. I've got it right now and it feels like someone is stabbing me in the foot all of the time. Hurts like a mother too.

I tried some new shoes with better support, and they helped, but I'm on my feet all day running around and the pain comes back periodically. Try a search on google for some excercises.Usually a good stretching tends to ese the pain.

Peace

Uh, I had the exact same thing going on last week. :Q It went away, though. It was my left foot, the toes in the center. It was worse when I woke up in the morning, so it might have been a weird sleeping thing the whole week.

No clue what caused it. I don't think it was gout. :p

oh I forgot to mention something:
like I said various things like this (maybe not the exact same thing, but similar stiff joint things) have happened to me before any usually they go away from just waiting a day, or from forceably stretching/popping the joint around.

but I stretched and popped my foot around as much as I could and it didn't make any difference
