Better luck next time.

It's critical for Civil engineers, and certain othe rfields in specific industries - electrical power engineering comes to mind.

For other engineering fields it's very rare. In my career to date I've only met two people working in Aerospace that had their P.E. One told me he did it on a whim because he was teaching an EIT prep class.

It's alright, you learned two things from it.

1) Don't tell a whole bunch of people about something if there's a chance it won't come all the way through
2) Study more for the retake

you are still a civil engineer regardless of your status with the PE exam. that is stupid to say you arent. you arent a professional engineer...there is a difference.

also, dont sweat it. most people have no idea how hard that test is. the FE test is a breeze if you know your stuff. the PE test is a completely different story. i read the other day something like <20% pass it on the first or second try. tons of people have to take it more times than that, too. dont be ashamed...all the people you have to tell you "failed" couldnt even understand the first question, so dont let them rip on you.

good luck next time.

its not a regular test. simply studying more wouldnt have helped him. the experience of taking the test once is what you need to do better the next time. the problems are MUCH more complicated than just understanding a concept. almost no other tests compare to the difficult of the PE exam.

I'm an engineering student. I get the feeling that the PE test is much more difficult and involved than the MCAT. The MCAT will get you into a medical school, the PE is a huge accomplishment and means the State you took it in trusts you to build bridges and buildings that would cause thousands of deaths if they failed.

Also, MCAT is to get into a school, PE is after you've been working for a couple years. I really don't think the MCAT is even in the same league.

its 4 just to be exact. your masters can count towards your goal of 4, but you get a max of 1 year of experience for it regardless of how long it took you to get. the other 3 must be from a job.

edit: well, it is 4 in texas anyway. not sure if it changes from state to state.

im an engineering student as well, and ive had 2 internships at civil/structural engineering firms with PEs in both places...you are correct in your assumption that it is a major accomplishment. the majority of engineers do not even attempt it, and the ones that do usually fail at least twice. my sister is a civil engineer who took the MCAT and the PE test...she said the MCAT was not nearly as hard or involved. she said it was more of a memorization type of thing instead of critical thinking and using all of your previously gained knowledge to tackle some seriously hard problems. she graduated with a degree in BME also, so she is all around the spectrum...a jack of all trades.

Which test did you take in the afternoon? I'm going to take the Water Resources test next year. I hope I can pass it the first time.

Sorry but go to a University in India, we can't teach in the U.S. anymore especially since most Americans don't believe in science anymore.

You have to believe in science to excel in engineering.

I think I speak for everyone in this thread when I say:

Shut the fsck up Dave, your rants are annoying, pointless, and this one in particular doesn't even make grammatical sense. Keep your rants to P&N and get the fsck out of OT if this is going to be your response to any thread involving science, engineering, and any derivative thereof.

Just because you suck at a career in engineering doesn't mean anyone who is advanced enough to get a PE will.

What makes you think I suck at engineering?

I bet you are using something I had a hand in it's engineering right now.

Because you telling someone who was getting his *PE* that he needn't bother because the US doesn't believe in science anymore? And that he should go to India instead? It would be funny if it was a joke, but you really don't think of it as a joke, as a quick trip to P&N reveals. At which point it is no longer a joke, it is something that you keep on interjecting into relatively unrelated (i.e nonpolitical threads) and it gets annoying because every time I read a thread like this, I just get so sick of the same response, every time, in every thread. Dave, do you even begin to see why this identical response that you post in every thread of this type starts to get extremely annoying? I mean, do you understand that no one who posts a thread likes this really gives two sh!ts about this copied-and-pasted rant you've come to accustomed to using?

Or give you the hat. ;) Oh and don't stress it, just study next time in the areas you were weak and review the areas you were strong in.

For those talking about the FE vs. PE, I thought the FE was much harder but I took the PE when work out problems were still in the test so that you could get partial credit.

It's not funny, at least you got that part of the message.

I plan on taking the PE eventually - It's been nearly 12 years since I took the FE...Just never got around to going to the next step ;)

Haha, reminds me of when I bragged to everyone about getting my driver's license before I took the test, and then failed it. Was that every embarassing at school the next day. :p

If I can contribute anything, I'd say you should write down your impressions of the test and remember how the questions were structured for the next go-around.
