Fuzzy Trinitron

My Dell Trinitron 19" monitor is sort of "fuzzy", the text is sort of fuzzy to read and what not. Anyone know how to fix this? I have a Radeon 64mb VIVO video card.

Damn I don't know then. I was thinking it could be a cheap cable cause I had fuzzy text until I got a good SVGA cable for my 21in Sony. Well here is a least a bump for a good answer.

The single most common cause of a fuzzy Trinitron display is having the brightness turned way too high. Go to here and do some adjusting.

What resolution are you running? It's a common misconception that Trinitron tubes are always sharper than shadow mask tubes. Consider how a Trinitron tube works. Instead of a sheet of metal with tiny holes, it uses thousands of vertical wires. Now look at the letters of the alphabet and notice that many of them use vertical lines. Those lines can actually fall between the wires, creating a "blurry" appearance. The higher the resolution, the more likely the letters will fall on those verticals.

In many cases, a shadow mask tube is superior for text. The disadvantage is that the larger monitors tend to be bulbous instead of flat.

Make sure the convergence is set right. I actually find trinitrons have convergence off a lot more than other monitors.

Best way to check this if you don't have a test pattern is just draw some bright purple lines on a black background in Paint or other apps. If you see red and blue lines separately instead of a purple line you need to adjust the convergence until they are totally overlapped.

BTW great link dkosloski

Actually, sounds like MOIRE to me...... if you have moire correction turned all the way up, it will make the picture look "fuzzy"(even when there are no moire inducing patterns on the screen)... try adjusting the settings 🙂

that seems to be it. I turned the res up higher and it got blurry.

I'm surprised that Gosharkss hasn't hit this thread yet. He works for Cornerstone and has some excellent insights for monitors. What little I know comes from talking to guys like him at the old Radius.

Monitors can be really frustrating things. The combinations of monitor, refresh, resolution, video card, and cable all conspire against a perfect picture. I have a Samsung 19" shadow-mask and I remember upgrading from a TNT to a Radeon. It was like night and day how much sharper the Radeon was. Now I've upgraded again to a nvidia ti4200, and I'm putting up with slightly blurry again. Curiously, my cheap Samsungs have always looked better to me than my expensive Mitsubishi monitors.
