Fuzzy text / graphics

Hey all,

Sorry for the noobness not in tech support. Thought this may be an ok place here. I have a server that had NT on it. No onboard video. Has a little 2 Meg trident. I was able to get 800 x 600 Res under NT. Wiped the HD clean and installed XP and now all I get is fuzzy/blurry graphics. I also get like 3 mouse pointers on the screen. I can't even really read the text. I've tried booting in safe mode (640 x 480 VGA). Changed from 32 bit to 16 bit and back. Checked in Device manager and card is there and device is even "working properly". I was thinking maybe the card couldn't handle XP or I messed up the monitor by messing w/ resolutions which I guess you can do (its 17 inch but older envision model). But I know I'm just missing the obvious here. Can someone help me out. Thanks.

Are the proper drivers installed for the Trident card? Sounds like a fairly old card. You may not be able to find an XP driver for it.
Do you have any other old vid cards to try in there?

XP should have the drivers for all the old cards... it found the drivers for my S3 Vision 864 1MB and my 4MB Matrox Millenium II
It could be the refresh rate.. but I'm sure you have already tried 60Hz...
I'm guessing the monitor cable probably came loose here... make sure it's plugged in snuggly

I mean, its a really old card. Probably 5 - 7 yrs old. But I always thouht XP would find most cards just fine. I mean the driver is there and it says it's working properly. That doens't mean anything? The kicker is everything was working when I shut it down..... I was messing around w/ resolutions on NT, but as soon as I loaded XP, I ran into the problem.

boot in safe mode and turn settings to 640*480*16*60hz

Done. Even have tried 2 monitors. Its doing the same thing. Don't have another card handy. I think its just something else in the settings/drivers. Anyone else?

I would try to pick up a cheapo TNT or TNT2 card for that setup. You can probably find them in the FS/FT forum reaaaalllly cheap.
If you tried 2 different monitors then I would have to assume the card has lived its life.

You know, the funny thing is, I forgot I that I did have an older Trident PCI card available for test. So I put it in and XP recognized it and it works, no problem. Go figure. So an older PCI card works but a newer card that's AGP won't. Figured XP drivers pick up everything....
