what the hell are you talking about? As usual you exaggerate with some revisionist history and then try to put your speculation as superior.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_8_Series
The 8800 series, codenamed G80, was launched on November 8, 2006 with the release of the GeForce 8800 GTX and GTS.
Letsee, 280GTX was released in June, 2008; just over 1-1/2 years later
THIS COMING November will BE 3 years i.e. Nov 8, 2009; 9 months away is the 3 year anniversary of 8800GTX's release. Sure it "lasted"; two years; maybe, if you made a late transition to 19x12 and DX10

And is there a game a 8800gtx can't play? Of course if we went by your standards a quad sli GTX 280 can't play a game.

now you are trying to run away from the issue -
there is NO "future proof"
.. you made a ridiculous claim that the "8800 lasted MORE THAN 3 years" when it was superseded in HALF that time

- we are going in circles aren't we?
Yes, the GTX is OLD >> OLD!
- there are MANY games it cannot play - *compared* to 4870 and GTX260 .. and lets ADD 260+/280/285/295/X2
- it is less than a 4850; a midrange DX10 card .. it fails with AA and cannot handle 19x12
of course,
depending on your standards
--if yours are very low you can keep 8800GTX for many years more
