Future-proof RAM?

I'm looking to upgrade to 2 gigs of RAM. I want to be sure that I have something that will last through atleast the next upgrade. I'm currently running an Opteron 165 (Socket 939), and I'm sure I'll upgrade to AMD in the future. What should I buy to ensure that it's future-proof, if possible?

They won't be as its not DDR2.

And DDR 2 isn't all that future proof, with DDR 3 arround the corner. Future proof is only available with cases, PSU's to an extent, optical drives, hard drives to a relative extent, modems, and sound cards. Anything else is unlikely to last you past your next upgrade cycle.

Those are future proof in a different sense.

Yeah I got 1gb ATM and don't see any point in upgrading my memory to 2gb till my next major upgrade. Which will probably be around Crysis and UT2007 releases.

RAM is the most problamtic component in that sense. DDR2 is finally entering the market, and DDR3 has already been developed and there is already DDR4. next time, don't get 2GB of something that you know you can't keep.

S939 runs on DDR, M2 and anything else AMD has in the works will run on DDR2 or DDR3. No getting around it.

Not nessisarily with cases, don't motherboard sizes change once in a while so old cases won't work?

i have some cases that are 8yrs old, still atx in size and new m/b still fit in them although psus needed to be changed. there is pretty much atx, matx and btx (not sure where that is going) and then the server boards that are usually eatx.

BTX is having trouble finding traction. The same people said that RDRAM was the future of system memory.

which is why motherboard cases come with removable motherboard trays. And that's also why dremels were invented =p

I'm still using all of my Enlight 7237 cases that I purchased in the 1997-1999 timeframe. Even the QUALITY power supplies from that timeframe still work, although I've replaced most of them with Antec 380W supplies.

My wife used the same AT-compatible case and power supply for 13 years, running it 24/7 from 1987 to 2000. It probably held six different motherboards over that time. We only dumped it because she finally went to an ATX motherboard. Plus, although it was huge and weighed a TON, it really didn't have much room inside for working on the drive bays.

if you want to overclock, be sure and grab some PC4000 ram. my ram (see my sig) is really good for ocing for 2x1GB sticks...

that is, if you are planning to stick with your system (and DDR memory) for a while.

but if you dont oc, PC3200 2x1GB is still a solid choice.

At this moment I would say Corsair XMS2 6400 c3 is probably the bet DDR2..

Future! DDR3 within the next year or 2
DDR4 in about 4-5 years.

Also AGP Express is a definite possibility .

DDR1=

2 gigs: 512mbx2 X2 (2-2-2-5)

4 gigs: 2X1GB X2 (2-3-2-5)

DDR2=

buy two 2 gig kits

DDR800: 4-4-4-12

as far as AMD goes, just get a 2-3-2-5 set and you are square

if you're doing Intel, do the DDR800, it will give you the edge if you need the bandwidth when you OC

agp is coming back? were did you see this?

also, that is a pretty sweet rig, any pics?

1) If you want to be future proof even for a year or atleast 6 months, then get alteast 4GB ram, 8GB preferred, 4GB strongly recommeneded and absolutely essential.

2) For Conroe get DDR 2 667/800/1000 or higher speed ram.

3) DDR3 is not around the corner, who is goign to buy it before a year or even more tyime.

8GB - what os are you suggesting since xp can only use ~3.25GB. xp64 has a limited amount of drivers, so i wouldn't go that route yet.
