A mob of students fought each other, set off firecrackers and rushed the streets after the Brush Towers were evacuated because of power outages Wednesday.

At around 9:30 p.m. about 1,000 students flooded the streets outside the dormitories chanting, “USA,” “SIU,” “Africa” and “F- – - the police.”

Dewayne Moore, an undecided freshman from Plainfield, said the disturbance began after some students set off firecrackers, which angered many in the crowd.

University officials played down the incident.
“I wouldn’t call it a riot,” said SIUC spokesman Rod Sievers.

Offiicers at the scene, many of them with riot masks and batons, kept journalists at a distance. Officers shined their flashlights at photographers to prevent them from focusing their cameras.
This is 0.5 mile away from where I live.. I was walking past this ruckus yesterday night as I had the lab I work lost power.

Location of the disturbance.

No it was just a gathering of like-minded individuals a little upset because they couldn't watch Netflix.

Our univ has a bit of history with riots.. the biggest was during the Vietnam War IIRC. But this is pathetic.. they can't hold their shit together for 2 hours.

The worse thing we have here are our football chants. Pretty rough sounds lol

That's because kids today aren't getting the needed smack upside the head from their parents when they do dumb shit. <Old man mode> Back in my day, when I did something dumb I got either a spanking or one hell of a yelling to. I learned real damn fast not to be a dumbass. </Old man mode>
