Future Mac

I'm thinking about getting a Mac for my next computer, maybe in a year's time. I've been a PC user for the past 12 years.

I intend to play some games. The current Imac has a really mediocre video card, which I've heard is even worse than what the previous Imac came with. Beyond that, the Power Mac is overkill with its Xeon's processors, and more importantly out of my budget.

Does Apple have any plans to release something like the G5, i.e. a more typical tower computer? Also, have they indicated what video cards the next Imac may come with?

I have no idea what Apple's plans are and neither does anyone else.

The MacBook Pro has a pretty kickin' graphics card, especially for the size of the machine (1" thick, closed). But I can understand if you wouldn't want to spend that much money.

Sigh. It would be nice if Apple would come out with something lower-cost but more easily upgradable like the cube of old. I'll put that on my wish list along with an ultra-portable laptop with solid-state drive. We can dream, can't we?

The previous iMac came with an x1600 in 128 and 256MB varieties. There might be a couple things it did better, but as long as you don't go with the 2400XT, you're going to be better off. That said, neither card is any powerhouse in modern games.

Don't purchase anything until January, unless you absolutely need it right now. There's sure to be new stuff at Macworld.
