Furniture stores with modest prices?

Just got off the boat and I need to furnish my new flat. Few years ago I had the time and truck to grab my stuff off of Craigslist but this time around I need to get into an unfurnished flat hundreds of miles away without a car or truck. So pretty much I seem to be stuck buying new furniture and having it delivered.

Only problem is that I'm looking for a small living room set (sofa, loveseat, end tables and coffee table) and a bedroom set (bed, nightstand, dresser or chest of drawers) and I've got a budget of about 2 grand for it all. So that means I'm stuck squarely in say Ashley Furniture price ranges. Not exactly where I want to be. So where do you guys look for cheap furniture that won't be a total mugging (other than Ikea, I hate their furniture for the most part)?

Furniture row, decent prices, great selection. I remember buying sofa loveseat one end table coffee table bed (no mattress), one night stand, all for about 2200 about 6 years back...

It's too bad you don't have a Bob's Furniture out there. They're the go to place for cheap furniture in the Northeast US.

At the rate they're expanding, you'll probably get one of your own in a few years.

Yeah, I searched through some of the older threads involving this and most people were just suggesting regional stores that I do not have access to.

Dangit, there's no Furniture Row around where I am staying before I do the move but there is one where I am moving to. Their prices do not look too bad, I could probably find something in my budget there. I would have to gamble on waiting until I get down there to buy though.

Ashley was my first thought. Check and see if you have an "Unclaimed Freight" company too. They usually have dirt cheap stuff at those.

Why do you feel like you need furniture right when you get there? You might need a bed, but other than that get a couple of folding chairs and a card table. That will give you time to look around locally to find the furniture that you want.

Find outlet centers for scratch and dent furniture.
Macys Outlet, JC Penny Outlet, Sears Outlet, etc.
Google Map "Furniture Outlet" around your area.

Second the Ashley recommendation. We bought a coffee table there last year and it's a pretty nice piece that's sturdy. Better than paying 3x what we would have ended up paying somewhere else.

Big lots isn't bad if you can find a good store. They get the shit that was cleared out of major stores but they didn't sell out before new models came in, so often you can find decent brands at good prices. However you're pretty much stuck with what's on hand... no ordering or "from the back" type stuff.

The one I've been using in my area is True Value furniture. I'm not sure if it's a chain or just a store, but I bought a good sectional sofa there as well as a desk. Both were good prices for relatively good stuff (for the price). If it's a chain and you have one near you, check it out.

No car. I won't be able to go around and pick up piece by piece.

B2B, where are you? IL as your listed location states?

Yeah, I'm in Chicagoland right now and I'll be moving downstate. I think I'll wait until I get downstate and head on over to the local Furniture Row to get furniture. I have a lot of discount stores up here (Ashley, Value City) but from the visits to these kind of stores I have a feeling that the overall quality is about the same between all of them. In the meantime at least I can plan the layout and get ideas about what I want.
