So I finally got around to heading down to the DOT office to register my car in WA. Its a pain in the ass because the place is only open something like 9-4 from M-F. I manage to clear out time for an extended lunch and get my way down to the office...only to find all King County offices are closed for a "furlough day" as a cost cutting measure?

So not only are they so inept at balancing the budget that they have to give all county employees a defacto 4% pay cut while inconveniencing everyone that needs to use these services, it was displayed NOWHERE on the department of transportation website. Not a word.

I'm annoyed, so I fire off a few emails to various politicians. I get this auto reply from the
head of the department of transportation:

As a cost saving measure, this office is officially closed Friday, February 13. King County offices are also closed Monday, February 16, in observance of Presidents' Day. I will be back in the office on Tuesday, February 17, and will return your email as soon as possibble. Thanks.

I can't help but laugh. That's just too funny.

At least everyone got a 4 day weekend out of the deal.

Ugh....as soon as I hit "send" i felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I knew what it was. I was already twitching with rage before even opening it.....

maybe you should follow local politics closer, then you have a right to complain. The 4-day work week has been discussed for a long time now

Regardless of how closely I follow local politics, when the offices are closed, it should say so on the department's website.

Discussed and implemented are quite a bit different.

And that still doesn't excuse the Washington State DOL from the fact that their website says that they are open today.

Again though - the website should have said something. Even IF I knew that today was the day all county offices are closed, it still might not have hit me that the DOL was closed - it is, after all, a STATE function, not a COUNTY function - it just so happens that the office in downtown Seattle that handles this is the county transportation office.

So? What about someone who doesn't? They can't take two seconds to put "BTW we're closed today" on their website?

ok now I agree with OP

I applied for a job through the state agency, the online posting said the employer did not want direct applications but wanted the agency to refer people. So I apply, two days later get an email saying 'You've been selected as a top candidate for this position,' and asking me to come in and talk to one of their 'specialists.'

I take the bus down to the office (cars not yet fixed), spending $2 on fare, place is full of ex-meth addicts and smells bad. I tell the receptionist why I'm there and she says I have to fill out a registration form, with all of my employment history and duties, by hand, even though all of this information is registered on their web page. So I do that and halfway through filling out the form she goes on her lunch break, someone else fills in. That person says the first person must complete my registration so I have to wait. I wait, for ten minutes or so, then ask what exactly I am waiting for and how the process works (so if it is just an appointment I can make it and get the hell out). She then takes another look at the form and miraculously finds a way to do it.

What does she do? Why did I waste two hours going down to this office? Filling out the form? She hands me a printout. I ask "What is this?" She says "The job description." I say "Ok. What do I do now? Do I meet with someone?" She says "No, that is the employer. You've unlocked the secret." She says it in a sarcastic way so I know she probably gets people in there all the time wondering why they had to go all the way down there for that.

It was for a job at Home Depot. I'd already applied.
