# Find the ?Device Manager". Right-click on the unknown device, ?Linksys_Instant_Wireless_Card". Update driver. ?Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device. Would you like to search on the internet?? Yes, I?d love to, but I can?t, you moron. Install driver from specific location. Specify WIN2000 folder on old-and-inferior install disc.
# ?This driver is not digitally signed.? OK.
# ?This driver may cause your computer to become unstable.? OK.
# ?This driver may anally rape your mother while pouring sugar down your gas tank.? OK.

lol at the last line

We typically have XP builds in and out the door in under an hour. And plenty of them have been running fine since they were origionally deployed (Windows did need frequent reinstalls back in the 9x days, but nowadays a properly run/administered XP system should be able to run for years).

With all the sh!t this guy is doing to his system it's no wonder that he has to reinstall every 9 months. 90+% of the "tweaks" out there just cause problems.

Still a lot less time than it takes to install linux!

Hardly. But even if it were true, you only have to install Linux once, ever. I've been running the same Debian installation at home for at least 5 years.

Would much rather dual boot with linux then use cygwin

Cygwin isn't that bad, but it is slow. A better alternative is CoLinux.

I'm still running the same install of XP since it first came out. That was like five processors and four motherboards ago. It still boots quick (although I rarely get to see that - only reboots really happen after hours during winupdates) and is completely stable.

The Wife's computer get's an occasional rebuild since I do aweful hardware things to it, but with modern gear it's usually ready for a game of quake in about an hour and a half. That's rebuilding from scratch, no images or whatnot.

Linux takes a competent admin to use right. Windows takes a competent admin to use right. I question the competency of anyone who gets either OS installed and "moved into" in five hours.

So am I, I'm about as tired of it now as I am with the "Windows sucks" people

EDIT: now that I think about it they are usually members of the same crowd...

Thanks Anita, I enjoyed the link. :) I have a python book by that guy. He makes a good point about all the obnoxious cruft that MS forces on users. I wouldn't despise MSN nearly as much if it simply behaved itself instead of trying to take over two thirds of my PC like some gator malware.

I just now finished installing XP pro (with sp2 on a separate disk, not slipstreamed) in just under 2 hours. That includes all current drivers and apps and updates as well.

:cookie: for me :p

I tried Gentoo on a old 200mhz laptop once. Just to see how long it would take.

Took 3 days of constant compiling, maybe 4. Crapped out when it ran out of room on the harddrive for all the X Windows patches it tried to download... It seemed like their was gigs of that crap.

But I wasn't use the laptop for anything, so it only wasted the laptop's time and not mine. I probably put less then 10minutes of effort into it.

Windows XP takes a long time to isntall. There is no doubt about it... Maybe you could get it done in a hour if everything goes perfectly and your using a disk with SP2 preisntalled on it. Otherwise you spend a great deal more time rebooting the system then anything else.

My favorite method of install is to do a ftp-based install on Debian. If I pick a good and fast mirror I can get 300-400 kB (bytes) out of the download and it's done in no time. Lot faster then downloading a big ISO image. And only one reboot is needed, or two if you need a newer kernel and everything is completley up to date as you install it. (but I don't realy know how long it takes because the install is going on unattended the majority of the time... )
