so today at work, a customer grabs an HP external DVD+/-RW drive and walks to the media isle with it. he picked up a 10 pack of dvd+r media, took a UPC sticker off a 50 pack of floppies, put it over the SKU on the burner's box, and tried getting rung out. At the register, the cashier scanned the burner and it rung out at 14.99. LIKE SHE WASN'T GONNA NOTICE! we couldn't really arrest him or anything cuz we couldn't prove he was the one that did it, but it was funny watching his face turn all red as hell  :D:D:D

I had a friend who ran a much better scam at frys:

Find something expensive. (At the time, a GeForce256 card was about $350).

Find something cheap, that comes in a big box: Printer paper rack - $9.95.

Remove vidcard from box, place in printer paper rack box. Buy printer paper rack.

I guess he just had to not get caught opening the vidcard box, and he was set.

Also, I think he only did this once. He felt guilty afterward and as far as I know, never went back to that fry's again.

So, was he sent to pound-me-in-the-ass federal penitentiary?

FYI: Fry's has plain-clothes workers who look for people trying to make this type of a switch.

trust me they got it all.... i under no circumstances, condole that to be a moral act though, its breaking the law.

I used to work at a grocery store, i asked the cashiers if they ever checked it and they were dumbfounded.... lol some of the actually started to look for em. I remember one kid tried to steal vodka when i was working it was tight! We had an offduty cop shopping. They got into a fist fight. Wont ever forget that.

Anyone that works in kmart or retail stores knows this stuff occurs with oil filters all the time. Notice how all the mobil 1 oil filter boxes have frams in them? People switch, cashiers don't know the difference.

actually this does nothing to best buy's business...the defective stuffs goes straight back to the manufacturer. But when people steal it DOES affect everybody that works there...as we are supposed to get shrink checks every year and the less shrink the more the check. there has unforunately been a LOT of theft lately at my store and our check is only $92 right now :( (should be close to $400).

I spent 2 years at best buy...and this was a standard move for a while. But rarely did it work because people got too gready...like in this case. Even cashiers know that a dvd burner isnt 14.99. Also, items like that are generally spider wrapped so it wouldnt work because the cashiers know that there is a price cutoff for spider wraps.

Customers do that all the time at Home Depot. I used to catch people monthly switching UPC's from the primed moulding (0.30 cents a foot) to the oak moulding ($3-4 a foot) and then buying 1000 feet of it.

Thieves are scum.

What's the difference between putting it in an empty box or under your coat, and then buying something cheap to avoid suspicion? For me that's stealing.
