we sometimes recover data from client's machines that wont boot. Last week I talked to a guy at one of our bookstores and his work station will not power on. I asked him to send the computer to us so we can recover the data.
I got a box delivered to me today that was much larger than usual. I open it up and found a 17" monitor. I called the client to see if he had shipped it by mistake. His response ..... I save all my stuff on the desktop, so thats what I sent in 😕

I polietly asked him to ship the CPU as well

So he's going to take the processor out of the motherboard and send just that.

Maybe you should ask him to send the tower as-is.

Wait you meant by that the whole computer right? I would've quit my job if he just sent the thing with the pins...😛

thats what they call them

CPU = the computer

I would think this is pretty normal... my neighbors and parents always assume that the monitor is the computer, so they press the power button on the mointor, expecting that the computer will turn on as well.

Luckily, we don't get too many questions and things like that anymore.

When I was in college, I worked the helpdesk in the IS department. You wouldn't beleive the questions I would get. My all time favorite:

"Helpdesk, how can I help you?"
"Yea hi, my computer has a problem."
"What's that?"
"Well, it's not turned on."
"Um... okay... go ahead and turn it on."
"OH thanks!"

Yes, I'm serious.

please dont let me go there.....

client : I have an error message on the screen and it is frozen
I : well... if it is not reponding... trun the computer off ...wait 10 secs and turn it on.
Client : I did and have the same error on the screen

sigh

ROFL this thread is even better now!

The CPU?

Even the OP doesn't know the correct terms :laugh:

That's why I normally don't do comp repairs, only for my family and my friends. And in those cases I'll just go over to their houses and do things myself, ty.

no...the CPU is the processor. If he sent that to you what would you do?

I think you have just entered the same class as your customer.

When I mentioned CPU ... his answer was " Oh .. that white box you connect the mouse/keyboard to"

thus
CPU = the computer
