Honestly, I've had to deal with histrionic emails/phone calls so many times that I could have easily defused the situation.

Sometimes the world of geekdom is almost emabarrasing to me, and at times I'm very disappointed by those that present a face to the public. The CentOS developer's replies were flippant and of NO value whatsoever. Yes, it's somewhat ridiculous that the man emailed CentOS; yes, the man was far too emotional. Let's break down the CentOS developer's email:

CentOS is an operating system. It is probably installed on the computer
that runs your website.

Does the average user know what the hell an operating system is? Does the average user know that the "computer that runs your website" is somehow a separate entity on a separate machine on a separate network (potentially)? Of course not. These boundaries are known to pundits, not layman.

We hope you are happy with it, since we produced it for free and you are
able to use it without paying us ... and are even threatening to have us
arrested for providing to you free of charge.

More flippancy.

Please contact someone who does IT for you and show them the page so
that they can configure your apache webserver correctly.

Too many expectations, imo. "Contact someone who does IT" should have pointed the man in the right direction though.

So seriously people, it's great that we're all geniuses, but have some damn respect for those that don't quite get it; you can bet that they specialize in something that you don't get either, but the test of a person with knowledge is how they don't use it to condescend others.

This is another example of a theory I have: The people that claims to have X years of experience are usually the ones that know nothing but boast the loudest.

I see too much of this already.

It's not a theory, it's poor logic. It's called an appeal to authority, and the great majority of ATOT uses the same in their arguments.
