Funniest customer support message I got!

Here is a paraphrased version of a message I got in the support box (this person is serious!)

"I was looking over my website statistics and noticed a large drop in website
hits on the days of Sept. 11 and 12. My hits were down about 80% those days! Were your servers down those days, and if so, why wasn't I notified of this?!?!"

I couldn't stop laughing after I read that... They never responded to my reply yet.

Can't see the forest for the trees. He probably hasn't replied back because he just now realized what an idiot he is 😀

I probably didn't reply very professionaly but this is sort of how it went...

"I am not sure if you remember, but on Sept. 11 a catastrophic event
occurred and a couple buildings fell down in NYC. The people that normally visit your site were probably part of the millions crashing CCN's website 🙂"

Yes I did end with a smiley 🙂

a customer called me and asked why his modem wouldn't work. i gave him a few possible reasons and he dismissed them.. he then asks me:

"do you think maybe lightning hit it?"

um.. wtf? lightning? inside your house????

Never heard of lightning taking out a modem?

Then you guys haven't seen everything yet. First, lightning can take out a modem. If lightning hits a telephone pole, guess where it can take a direct line to if you don't have a surge suppressor? In a serious electrical storm where I grew up years ago, several computer modems (as well as some computers) were damaged when lightning hit a telephone pole. And sometimes even the static differential can blow a modem, since computers are usually grounded, and make an *excellent* electrical 'sink' for charges of all kinds.

And the phenomenon of lightning in the house is quite common. One of my friends house was struck by lightning, and he got a chance to see the very rare 'ball' lightning. Said it went tearing around their house for quite a while...Some people even get to experience St. Elmo's Fire....

I had two modems bite the dust thanx to lightning, within a short period of time. Previous to that I had never had a problem for many years. You can bet who always has his phone lines running through a surge suppressor now!

These were nice USR 56k externals too ;( One I returned to Best Buy, the other I still have. Anyone know how to fix PM me.

I also lost a modem due to lightning.. didnt hurt the pc at all, but this think was fried. The phone cable was all melty, and the connector was black.

LOL!!! If this customer was a travel agent, that'd be even funnier. "I didn't sell any airline tickets for a LONG time. Was my site down!?" heheheheheh 😀

I did lose a modem during a storm. Why do you guys think newer power protections have a modem hook-up?

Probably the guy was already suspecting that lightning was the cause.

if your servers were down, wouldn't his hits been down 100%, not jsut 80?

<< if the lightning took out the modem, PC would've burned too. >>

Actually i've had it happen several times, and i know for a fact that it doesn't kill the whole pc. hmmm... maybe it happened again because now that part of the surge protector is broke.

/me runs off to email his dad
