Fun with an angry drunk

Went to a local festival, Mayfest, last night with a group of friends. We were having some drinks, checking out some art, listening to some bands, just generally having a good time. After we had been there about an hour this guy, I like to call him Captain Angry, shows up. I didn't know it at the time but he was/is dating one of the girls that was with us I thought he was just a friend of one of the guys. Anyway....all he does the whole time is bitch and moan about his ex girlfriend. Even calls her on the cell phone a few times to start an argument and then stands in the middle of the street yelling at her on the phone. He disappears for a while and I start going off about what an A-hole he is to the very girl that I later found out he is dating. All she can say is "I know, he's always like this." Captain Angry comes back after about 30 minutes and continues the drama to the point he is pissing me and everyone else off. After about 2 more hours and countless beers the guy starts in again and is making a scene in front of about....oh 3000 people. I walked over to him and tell him to shut the F up and calm down. The good Captain then takes a swing at me and misses, falling down in the process. I stand over him and tell him to calm the F down and quit being an ass. One of the other guys comes over and sits on Captain's chest and is telling him the same thing I am. This hole time Angry is yelling and screaming at the top of his lungs. Finally a couple of Sheriff's Deputies show up and make us let Angry up. They are trying to calm him down when the brilliant Captain decides to take a swing at one of them. Last time we saw him was in cuffs headed to the drunk tank. Rest of the evening went well, on the way home I'm told by this girl that she had been dating him but she was afraid to dump him because he was so violent. Well tomorrow she's going to tell him and myself and 3 other guys have to be there with her to help control the situation. Should be fun.

Captain Angry is about 5 feet 5 and weighs maybe 140lbs dripping wet. I'm just over six foot 230lbs, one of the other guys is 6 foot 4 270lbs and kickboxes. I think we can handle the good Captain.

I'm not saying you didn't do the right thing, but there is a good amount of historical precedent to support the "Angry Drunk Kills Guy doing Right Thing" scenario.
Two of my cousins have died from confronting drunks.... Now I have almost 200 cousins (including seconds and thirds) so that's not a terribly high percentage... nonetheless call a cop and get the hell out of his path.

You definately need to get the girl away from him.

Well if it had come down to a life or death situation I would have just shot the dumb bastard. I have a concealed carry license and I'm always carrying when I'm at an outdoor gathering of thousands of people. To be honest the guy seems like more mouth than fight. He did take a swing at me and the sheriff but I think that was more of a result of his being a dumbass than anything.
