Fun things to do in and around Orlando?

I'm traveling there next week to spend time with my Mom and see my brother and sister. My Mom lives in Melbourne Beach so that is where we will be staying. Nice hotel right on the water.

Anyway, my wife and son are coming with me and we have plans to head up to St Augustine for 1 day but other than that we're just going to hang around Melbourne Beach unless there is anything really cool to do in Orlando. We have been to the Kennedy Space Center recently and have zero point zero interest in Wally World.

I wouldn't go to Orlando if you've been there. From Melbourne Beach traffic will be a bear. I'd just stay along the coast if I were you.

How old is your son? International Drive is a complete tourist trap, but depending on how old the kid there is some pretty cool stuff there.

Also for St Augustine, I recommend Caps.

I'll pass you somewhere in the middle of the country, about 40k feet up. See you there!

He is 13 going on 21. :D

Thanks for the restaurant tip. I'm going to try to get reservations for the night we're there.

13 going on 21, huh? Sounds like my 14 year old.

Here's an idea that every teenage boy would like to do in Orlando: Let him go go the beach and "sight-see" there :)

Oh, we're going to be doing quite a bit of that I'm sure. :D He loves the beach.

He rode his bicycle to the beach here last Saturday with two of his friends. That is the farthest we've let him ride on his own yet (about 7 miles one way). He spent the day there with his friends and then they rode home around 3PM.

I remember eating a big chunky turkey leg. Do they still sell them? It was nice and shocking at the same time loool. This was like 7 years ago when we went to Orlando with the family :)

have you been recently?

We took our son to Disneyland in CA, which is about 50 minutes from our home, when he was 6. It cost us $250 plus food and parking and we haven't been back since and he has expressed no interest in returning. Why would I go to the Florida version?

Am I missing anything? o_O

Take airboat ride on East Lake Toho.

Visit the Morse museum in Winter Park which has the most comprehensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany pieces in the world.

Go to Gatorland.

Bikeweek in Daytona runs from Mar 4th to the 13th.

Legoland.

Looking to avoid as much of that idiocy as possible.

Plenty of other options. I've always found Bike Week to be a great time. ymmv.

I think we'll just hang around Melbourne Beach and spend time with my Mom and playing in the water and by the pool.

Not into bike the bike scene at all even though I do ride a motorcycle.

Bunch of douchebag harley riders and Das Busa idiots getting drunk and acting like assholes? No thanks.

Even if I wasn't with my wife and kid I'm not into the bike scene at all.
Have you ever been to Bike Week?

I don't own a motorcycle. Never have. But I have been to Bike Week many times and the people I've met there have always been awesome. When I went to my first one I thought the same as you...there would be a bunch of drunk, macho biker assholes.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Kids change and can appreciate different things as they get older?

I do own a motorcycle. Just not into the biker scene at all.

I like to ride in very small groups or just two up with my wife.

If I go, do I have to dress up like a gay pirate? :p

I've owned a few motorcycles over the years and I still own one, and I do ride it, to work mostly, at least a couple days a week, but I'm just not into the biker scene at all. I dabbled in the local sportbike meetup group for a bit, mainly because I have friends who ride who were into that, but I just don't have anything in common with most of those hammerheads and Harley riders are even further from my interest group. I prefer to keep a small, close knit group of friends who I ride with.
If you ever get the chance, without a 13 year old in tow, try Bike Week one time. It might destroy some stereotypes you currently hold.

I did provide some other options too. You could give those a shot.

I would definitely skip Wally world if he's 13. Universal is better if you can get a deal.
I've lived here for 35 yrs and I wouldn't come here unless I have kids under a 10.
