Fun I had in the ER

I posted about it Sat morning;
Fri night, I was having some really bad chest pains right over my heart. I was pretty sure they were stomach in origin; turned out I was right. But, before the doctors, nurses, etc. decided I was right, I was run through a battery of tests, needles, IV lines, the whole 9 yards.

But, the one thing I could do which amused me to no end was somewhat control my heart rate by what I was concentrating on; how calm I kept myself, etc. I could slow it to the upper 40's or raise it into the 70's. I could vary the pace by as much as 25 beats per minute in just a matter of 15 or 20 seconds. Pissed my wife off (who is an RN) because it made her really uncomfortable seeing my heart rate change like that; especially in the worried state that she was in.

Anyone else able to do that?
(or done it before?)

Your heart is going to explode. I call whatever food you have left.

I haven't tried it because I've never been hooked up to a heart monitor, but it's not uncommon. I saw a special about biofeedback a while ago and people were able to control a bunch of different things by having a monitor to see.

Yeah.... I've done that before. I very quickly learned that skill when quite a few people were trying to take me to the ER because they thought my blood pressure was way too high. Ten minutes later, they're all saying "WTF?"

hehe cool

I had to go to the ER thursday afternoon because i hurt my lower back really bad. I have never in my life experienced pain like that. so during the admission i was laying on the table with the BP/pulse/O2 gizmos hooked up to me and when my back would spasm i would hold my breath. well that set off the alarms on the O2 sensor becasue my O2 saturation would drop to 91 from 98, and my pulse would shoot up to 120 from 80. that seemed to get the nurses attention pretty quick. :)

I was amazed at how much control I actually did have...
If I'm ever hospitalized for a week, and I have to put up with a week's worth of
beep beep beep beep, then I'm definitely practicing til I get REALLY good!

I can control my heart rate..though not to your extent. Trained myself to move my ears and raise either of my eyebrows. The left one was a bitch to get going though.

Yep. I can move my ears, together or separately. Same with my eyebrows. Left up, then down, then right up and repeat or any combination.

I learned to control my heartbeat during cc in highschool. If i just start concentrating, the beats will go up. I can make it go up faster if I start tensing muscles, especially abdominal ones.

Experienced SharpShooters can do that, they shoot in between heart-beats and to get better shots they clam themselfs to lower their hart rate.

I can kinda' do it, not much though. figured out how to do it ,so I tryed it while shooting. It really helps for thoes long range shots. :)

yeah, i did that alot with many nurses prior to seeing the doctor. i learned it initially in my aikido training, along with controlling other bodily functions.
manipulating heartrate goes hand-in-hand with controlling your breathing.
a side-effect i experienced while in the initial stages of learning to control bodily functions is that i was never really sure what my "real" heartrate was as every time i got my heartrate checked i would involuntarily go into a controlled mode.
this was a real problem when i got put on a treadmill for stress testing where i couldn't get my heartrate up to where the technicians wanted it no matter how hard and fast they set the treadmill to run. i remember one stress test where i was on that treadmill for eight minutes giving it everything i had. i finally got my heartrate up by actually scaring myself with the thought that there was something actually physically wrong with me.
