Then why is it a lot of other schools are getting the same students BUT they seem to cope and even test at or above average. Like I pointed out, my girls HS was ready for this and she and other non-english students did well and she even went on to college etc... Mind you that was over 5years ago. NC knew this would be a problem and did not plan for it.

Sorry, but it is the school systems fault. They got caught with their pants down.

Over 5 years ago, it wasn't a problem here either. But why don't you ask her how her school is doing now before you rush to judgement 🙂

I'm not saying that the schools aren't at fault here, but I don't think that many people anticipated such a large explosion in less than 10 years.

I would hope not. Government schools already get a ton of money and it is mostly wasted with schools actually getting worse. More money is not the solution.

thats funny CT public schools havent seen a budget increase in 2 decades. Only the affluent towns have good schools.

Sounds like a problem with the CT school system then. Atlanta City Schools spend ~$10,000 per child and single handidly drag down Georgia's scores to the bottom in the nation. Washington D.C. schools spend upwards of $13,000 per child and are some of the worst in the nation. Alot of that money is eaten up by waste, corruption, and bureaucracy which your example only proves even more.

exactly how is that 13k broken down? If you spend 80k per child and they still sit 60 to a class with poor learning tools with over worked and underpaid teachers its gonna result in no difference.

I can't remember the numbers off the top of my head but a good chunk of it gets eaten up by bureaucracy, waste, and corruption. Which is why we don't need to spend more money as much as we need real reform.

To be fair to the school system / state, NC has experience the largest illegal immigrant growth of all non-border states.

Reform isnt free. They should start with bringing the schools themselves up to date. There is no reason why each desk shouldnt be equipped with a computer terminal.

dont bring that "better life" bull sh!t in here. a better life isnt always a good one. having massive amounts of people running over here Fing over the schools even worse than our own kids are is NOT the answer. if your bleeding heart wants to help them so badly then tell them to stay the F out untill we get OUR issues resolved. once the US actually becomes an educationaly good place to go then i say bring a few over. A FEW. and help them out. your dumb liberal "let everyone in" idea SUCKS. here why not just let em all in and say F the schools for everyone. let America become the next mexico and then when noone can tell the difference between the two the border problems will be solved......idiot.

Thank you for demonstrating the typical level of intelligence and civility of a conservative.

Yeah, it's a pretty difference. Back in 1998, the only hispanic people I saw were the 5 kids at school.

All I am sayign is put yourselves in their shoes, living in poverty, a lot of the factory jobs have moved to china, you can cross the border and make a life for yourself, are you telling me you wouldn't?

I could make a lot of money by being a criminal. Most people could. Now, there's a major difference in being an illegal immigrant and a straight criminal, but the fact remains that you are breaking laws just by being here. I'm all for a guest worker program with some amnesty. After that, we need to get serious about our borders.

Neil Boortz is a like a cult leader. I think anyone that listens to his drivel should be taken out back and shot.

Why are you fuming mad that they closed down the high school you graduated from 8 years ago? Why do you even care? 😕

What happened with all the European immigrants back in the 1930's? Schools didn't have ESL classes then did they?

Why would I care? Did you not like high school or something?

I actually enjoyed high school for the most part. I liked my teachers (which I still went to back to visit whenever I got the chance), I went to most all of our basketball and football games, I enjoyed the administrators (I got free reign of the place as a senior😉).

It was a great school and I loved it. Is there something wrong with me being upset that they are going to close it?

I was talking to my mom this morning and she said that she had some bad news. She told me that she was reading the newspaper and they are almost certainly going to close the high school, Hugh M. Cummings, (no jokes please😉) that I graduated from. At first, I was like WTF????

I graduated in '98 and the school was a great place to be (IMHO). Sure, we got the rap as being the "other" school since it wasn't on the ritzy side of town. Ratio was about 60% black, 40% white whereas the "good" school was about 80% white, 20% black. It's all well in good b/c our school was still good. There were like only 4 hispanic kids in our whole school (3 of whom spoke English). Kids didn't act up badly, teachers were great and our grades (as a whole) were great.

Turn to today and the school is filled with a bunch of kids that can't speak English (WTF!). The teachers are having the double whammy of trying to teach their English speaking students in addition to trying to teach English to students that are nearing adulthood. Test scores are in the dumps because (you guessed it), a large percentage of the kids can't speak/understand/write english.

So you've got this infection spreading throughout the whole school. The kids have no motivation to do any work, they could care less about going to school and the ones who do want to learn are suffering.

Sigh, makes me want to vomit! :|:|:|:|

just following a trend, i see

I liked high school, and there's nothing wrong with being mad that they're closing it, it just seems like a relatively trivial thing to get all bent out of shape over.

I'm not quite sure how they plan to solve the problems you described by closing the school... obviously those kids will have to go to a different high school, do they think it'll be any better there? 😕

pwned

- preposition at the end of a sentence
- shorthand Internet speak
- couldn't care less
- overuse of like

etc, etc.

How about you call me up when people actually give a damn about forum grammar 😀

My fiancé came from Vietnam and did not speak any English. But there were English as a 2nd language program setup at the high school and people that knew how to work with those that did not speak English. Seems the school keep playing the its not going to happen to us game and they got caught with their pants down. Mexicans moving into NC is not a new thing and the school should have been prepared. Bad management by the school.

It's one thing when you're teaching 4-5 kids English. But when you're dealing with a high school (and the issues that come with being a teenager) in addition to trying to teach them english and the standard course load, it's becomes a burden...especially when you're talking about a rather large percentage of non-english speaking students in the school.

My GF is even seeing it in her 1st grade class where she is doing student teaching. about 50% of the kids can't speak english and the bilingual students are the ones translating for the teachers. It's absolutely ridiculous.

How can the schools afford to do all of this bilingual training when existing teachers aren't even getting paid enough and the school system is already underfunded. You can't really blame the schools...
I have to agree with both of you 😛 I guess schools really aren't prepared for these changes, but I doubt they have the funds to be. If a school doesn't have an ESL (English as a Second Language) program setup, I'd imagine it would be difficult and costly to setup now. The whole public education system seems to be taking a dive, thanks to lack of funding and lack of parenting. Even in the "good" schools without the whole language issue, I'd imagine you'll find tons of middle to upper class kids who will come out without any clue about life because their parents just spoonfeed them everything they want. So poor/uneducated kids can't get the help they need and the well off kids don't make anything of their opportunity, YAY!!

Solution: blame everyone else! 😛

It's a good thing nobody asked you! You can be here legally and not be a citizen, you know.

don't worry, my high school is thinking about becoming a regional high school after linking one more town to join.

i graduated from my high school in '03 and we had like 450-500 students altogether. now they are under renovation to make the campus bigger so they can add more students from another town.

i rather to keep it small. 🙁

I sat in and did a bit of teaching in a third grade class in Phoenix. I saw the same thing there. In that case, 95% of the class was Hispanic. Out of about 28 kids, I would say six could not speak or understand a word of English. This meant that like your GF's class, the bilingual kids were translating instructions. Of course, they could not keep a running translation, it meant that they were mostly just told to do something without understanding why. It was sad really.

I think the real problem here is the parents. Most Hispanic parents are NOT encouraging their kids to learn English or excel (or even participate) in school. Of those six kids who could not speak/understand any English, probably three or four of them had lived in the US for at least two years.

I moved my senior year of HS to a new one in NY. My graduating class was about 1,600. Yeah, talk about one screwed up school there.

EDIT Except accomodating you out the damn door
