Ultimately, the new Sienna so clearly outclasses other minivans it almost seems unfair. It is all new, and as a result, the Sienna's main competitors are starting to show their age. The 2004 Sienna is not perfect, but what it does well it does really well. The Lexus-like interior is probably the most luxury you'll find in a minivan, and the wide range of prices and options should make it so that everyone can find a trim to fit their lifestyle and/or budget. We suspect all this hemming and hawing about clunky climate controls and balky seats will amount to nothing more than just a bunch of armchair quarterbacking on our part. The truth is there's no shortage of minivan buyers who want only two things in a family wagon ? a long wheelbase and a Toyota logo on the hood. Consider it done.

Well, seeing that the Odyssey is a 3 year old design, I would expect it to get owned of Toyota would be doing something wrong. Just wait until the current Odyssey's product cycle is up - the new one will p0Wn the Sienna, and then the cycle continues.

Sorry, I know for a fact that an Odyssey can and will peel-out. That seals the deal for me. Plus, its a Honda, how can you go wrong?

<-- Still bitter my parents bought a Camry.

Umm, the difference is not that great
Dynamically, the Sienna has matured nicely. Its 3.3-liter V-6 puts out just 10 fewer horsepower (230) and identical pound-feet of torque (242) to Honda's 3.5-liter in the Odyssey and returns better fuel economy (19 city and 27 highway versus 18 and 25). In a drag race, the Toyota will finish a car length or two short, trailing the Honda by 0.3 second to 60 mph and through the quarter-mile, but its times of 7.8 and 16.2 seconds are thoroughly respectable, and the Sienna always seems to champ at the bit. Even with eight passengers onboard, we had no trouble merging to freeway speeds on short uphill on-ramps. Let's call the power "more than adequate."

Why do you want to race in a van?

Because when a minivan can beat a good chunk of the riceboxes out there, it's a stone riot too see. :D

Edit: Car And Driver sez ...

2004 Toyota Sienna
Zero to 60mph: 7.8sec
Standing 1/4-mile: 16.2sec

Not bad for a minivan!

LOL:p Beats the hell out of me. Anyway, a minivan that can go 0-60 in 7.8 seconds is pretty damned good in my book.

/me loves mah 2002 Odyssey. :)

Actually looked at the 2002 Sienna's (and every other mini on the market). They were real tight (ie no room for this 6'2" body). Turns out the Odyssey was a better deal - their EX was priced better w/ more options than the mid-level Toyota. Still a nice ride though, that Sienna.

The new one looks pretty loaded. I like the split rear hide-away seat. Power tailgate is nice also (or is that the new Caravan???). But I like the looks of my Odyssey more. :)

I wonder how the new Nissan Quest will compare to the Sienna and Odyssey.

And aren't the GM minivans due for a redo? Or is GM canning their line of minivans?

Dad just bought a new 2003 Mazda MPV last week... 9.1 rating on Edmunds. This 2004 Sienna rated at 9.5 would be about $5k-$10k more than what he paid for the MPV before tax, etc.

MPV also has the fold-flat 3rd-row and the powered roll-down windows on the slide doors.

I'll give this Sienna the nod for interior and exterior looks, but not for nearly $10k more though.

Odyssey is in it's 4th year. They are changing it next year.
Then we'll see how both compare. You can't compare a 4 year old car with a new one ...

What a shock: the recently redesigned minivan from _____ company is better than every other companies three to five year old design. With minivans and mainstream family sedans, it usually goes this way--especially when you're judging a car by its "feature content".

That said, the Sienna does look nice. Its good to see "evolution"--you know, car makers picking up on the little things (particularly ergonomic things) that they failed on previously... not to mention, including the "good ideas" that their competitors used. Lets hope that ALL the carmakers figure this out (there are some that haven't *cough cough* GM *cough cough*).... its all improvement for us consumers. :)

I test drove the MPV about 3 yrs ago, unless they've improved the engine since then it was lacking in torque.
