Full Screen Caller ID on Android, why so difficult to get?

I've found a whopping 1 app that does this, and it does a piss poor job. My Windows Mobile 5 device could do it no problem (with an app) I decompiled the phone.apk but it doesn't appear this is something simple in a xml file. If anyone here is a coder a good full screen caller id app on Android would sell pretty well. Hell my S40 phone had this ugh.

What are you talking about? This is what you would normally see when receiving a call:

So um... it says the number, the name (if it's in your contacts list), and their contact picture (again, if they have one). And it takes up the whole screen. Does it need to be bigger?

What do you mean by full screen caller id? What isn't the stock option doing for you?

Sorry, I mean a full screen photo of the caller, that dinky 2 inch box is way too small. I think every other phone in existence outside of Android either has this built in, or there's a good 3rd party app to take care of it. I downloaded Full screen caller ID from the Market and it's pretty horrible. Dude wants 2.99 euros for the full version. I couldn't even get the free one to work right.

Q is 135 years old.

I recommend an iPad with full screen option Q. Its your best bet with your eyes.

:p

har har, a full screen picture looks good, at least Google could have given me an option to enable it or use the default shitty looking screen. The iPhone has this built in, and while it's not a deal breaker, it looks really nice to have a high resolution pic of the caller come up.

I decompiled the phone.apk and see what needs to be changed, but I pretty sure Android doesn't support high resolution pics for contacts. I'm not even sure what it does to one when you import it resizing wise (Google turns up nothing here)

Thanks for making me decompile and recompile shit Google to add functionality a decent number of people would like.

I don't know why you bother using Android. You obviously hate it so much you are obsessed with finding tiny pedantic little things like this to hate about it.

Why not just get an iPhone? You know you want one.

I like Android, I like modding my device. I had an iPhone I got bored with it and moved on when I ran out of things to mod on it. Android frustrates me with how hard it is to mod things that should be easy, but that's half the fun. And I wouldn't call full screen caller ID pics a tiny pedantic little thing, there's multiple threads on code.google.com with thousands of people bitching about googling adding what I'm trying to do. I like how Google marked one as "no problem found" with people complaning how their phone syncs super low resolution contact photos from FB and the photo caller ID photos are looking like ass with blurry low res pics. This obviously isn't a concern for you, but full screen pics are on every other phone. So Google should follow suit, I mean my damn Nokia w/ the S40 OS did it, and that OS is a huge steaming POS.

I'm down to 3 things I want to mod on my phone and I'll be happy with it.

Now that I know what Q is talking about, I kind of agree with him. I don't care about having huge full screen images of my contacts, but I would like them to be higher resolution. Especially the ones that are synced from Facebook.

edit: Here's a convoluted workaround that I don't feel like doing.

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/htc-evo-4g/124610-guide-keep-high-resolution-photos-caller-id.html

A person who works for Google told me to do this to solve the problem, go in and disable contact sync and update my contact and the pics manually. REALLY????? So instead of Google fixing this, one of their employees recommended (to me any ways) a super rigged workaround. Looking at the the threads on code.google it's almost like they don't read any of the posts about any issues people are having. I like Android a ton but it has some small nagging issues I know Google knows about, and apparently they could care less about fixing them. I suppose if people are happy looking at 64x64 images pushed to almost 2x their size looking pixilate and blurry as hell. Good for them. My phone has a very nice screen, but you wouldn't know it looking at a photo id, especially if it was synced from a facebook image. And even following the guide in the link you posted, I'm still left with a small photo when I get a call. Hell my fucking land line phone does a better job at photo caller id, that's a disgrace Google.

luckily for me I know how to use APK and hopefully can make modifications to the necessary xml files myself. I think the problem still will be I can't save a contact photo in high resolutions so about 300x300 is the best I'm going to get on my caller id screen. Better than nothing I suppose...

I'm there with ya. Its even worse on the iPhone4. At least you get a 2" x 2" photo, all I get is a .5" x .5". From what I can tell Google nor Apple really cares about this fullscreen contacts issue. I feel like it can be easily fixed, but I think its at the bottom of the list of things to fix.

To get full screen pics on my iPhone I have to disable google contact sync entirely and add the phones manually through the phone. A pain? hell yeah.

Adding more insult to injury, when you try to re-sync, whether it be Google or Apple address book, it will shrink your fullscreen contacts back down.

Basically you can't do any syncing at all, how convenient.

You think it's possibly related to saving battery life? Or perhaps that 99% of people can see a small pic with some text underneath and clear go. "Damn that's BillyBob calling"
Not stare at their phone saying, "Do I know this person? I think I need a 14MP picture to figure it out."

My phone is usually across the room in a dock on vibrate, I would need to be superman to see who's calling from where I'm sitting. How it is saving battery life? Weather the pic if full screen or not if the screen's lit up it's going to use the same amount of battery. Is this a needed feature? of course not, but many people like it, I just got a call and the picture looked like it was taken with a .1mp digital camera from 1998. Of course I was across the room and couldn't make out who it was until I got close to the phone. Turns out I should have stayed my ass in the chair cos it was a call I didn't answer. With a full screen caller id pic I could have glanced over and knew not to get up.

Some people like to mod their phones, I didn't need transparent power icons but I think they made my phone look better. As you put it, a 14mp caller ID photo would do the same IMHO. Why do you think people root their androids? To add shit Google left out, 99% of which isn't important. Do you have an Android phone? are you happy with the ugly, pixilated caller ID pics? Even if you don't want full screen, I don't see how you could be fine with how shitty they currently look. If I wanted low resolution old looking shit I'd get the original Palm phone that came out what 10 years ago? Which, oddly enough has a sweet app for full screen photo caller IDs.

Wow it's absolutely amazing the things some people want their phones to do that would never occur to me

Same here. Full screen pictures for incoming calls isn't something I would even want, just don't see the need to advertise to everyone around me that I'm getting a call from a female.

Still, I can see how some would want this capability. I no longer have a FB account, as an aside, so 99% of my contacts show up with an Android picture. :p

I've found in the past that somebody glancing in on a nice full screen caller id image of goat.se will be the last time that person's nosy about seeing who's calling somebody who's not them. :D

Is there a fix for this beyond the linking of the phone contact to the gmail contact? A real fix, I mean? Or do we have to wait for gingerbread?

Anubis. You suck at linking.

The blurry pic on the caller ID should have been fixed a long time ago. Its almost sad on how many issues take forever to fix.
