I guess I am not the only one that turns off this movie half way through, Although I stay until the me so horny scene.

There is a nice flub in that opening scene, they are all lined up and gomer pyle is standing near joker in the first shot but when joker gets chewed out by hartman gomer is further down the line.

If you ever get to watch a documentary about Gunny, you will even be more impressed with Full Metal Jacket.

After learning what Gunny did to get the part of the drill instructor, all I could say was "wow". Gunny did not get the part to start with, he had to audition for it.

My son and his best friend decided they wanted to enlist in the Corps. I made them sit down and watch the first half of the movie before I'd let them talk to the recruiting sergeant.
Then, AFTER they did, I took them both to the recruiting office and sat in on the conversation, just to make sure they covered all the bases...and didn't get lied to...too badly.

I can honestly say my recruiter did not lie to me. They may have not volunteered any negative information such as Uncle Sam will spend a lot of money to train you in electronics theory and avionics systems and repair but don't expect to make use of that knowledge anytime soon. Instead you will become the master of the mop bucket and swab and learn the finer points of exactly how to lay down a beautiful wax finish on a floor. But they never told me a lie to any question I knew enough to ask.

I remember reading that the entire movie was filmed in England.

The best scene in the second half of the movie was when he was flying over Vietnam and the gunner was just shooting at anyone that move. You know that shit really happened.

Former US Marine Corps Drill Instructor R. Lee Ermey was not originally hired to play Gunnery Sgt. Hartman but as a consultant for the Marine Corps boot camp portion of the film. He performed a demonstration on videotape in which he yelled obscene insults and abuse for 15 minutes without stopping, repeating himself or even flinching - despite being continuously pelted with tennis balls and oranges. Stanley Kubrick was so impressed that he cast Ermey as Hartman.

R. Lee Ermey was involved in a jeep accident during the making of the movie. At 1:00 a.m. one night he skidded off the road, breaking all the ribs on his left side. He refused to pass out, and kept flashing his car lights until a motorist stopped. In some scenes you'll notice that he does not move his left arm at all.

Full Metal Jacket 1 was awesome... no idea why they always showed FMJ 2 immediately afterwards though. :p
