Watching this again for probably the 50th time.

I think I actually saw Gunny cracking a smile in the first scene when he berates all the recruits.

This movie has to be one of the best of all time. For sure in any top 25 list I could make.

Semper Fi!

I love the first part of the movie...the Vietnam scenes...not so much. They just weren't very realistic.

Ive heard the opposite, many folks I know from the Armed forces say this is a pretty accurate (although dramatized) version of real life millitary

Yup, bootcamp is pretty much a 10/10 for me and the rest is just ok. The beginning was so good, anything after that was just going to be only ok. I don't know how realistic it is or not but it's just not as good as the beginning.

I dunno...I spent nearly two years in Vietnam as a Marine. The scenes in FMJ were too surrealistic.
There were lots of people like Animal Mother though...and lots of door gunners with the same attitude.

I only watch until the bathroom shooting scene, then just shut it off. It's like two entirely different movies.

A lot of people consider it 2 separate movies. All of it is good, though. Very good.

Awesome movie, especially the first half. Haven't seen it 50 times, but several.

If you ever come across the book "The Short-Timers" (movie is based on) it's a great read. By Gustav Hasford.

Without a doubt the first half is the most accurate portrayal of boot camp I have seen on film. I can't pass up watching it whenever I see it when channel surfing.

FMJ came out a month before i went to boot camp. yup it was pretty accurate especially the first night when you met your Senior Drill sergeant and his minions. I think the DI's got some ideas from that movie. some of the shit they said it took all i had not to crack up.

one of the more memorable ones that i remember (not in the movie)

"If i see any of your laundry bags looking pregnant im going to give the mother fucker an abortion!!!!"

we hung a laundry bag off our rack that we put our dirty clothes in.

My son and his best friend decided they wanted to enlist in the Corps. I made them sit down and watch the first half of the movie before I'd let them talk to the recruiting sergeant.
Then, AFTER they did, I took them both to the recruiting office and sat in on the conversation, just to make sure they covered all the bases...and didn't get lied to...too badly.

I watched this movie before I went to basic training...I was prepared for the worst and it never came.

Saw Stripes 3 days before going into basic training. FMJ wouldn't be around for a little while yet. Great movie though. One of my favorites.
