Info Full-formatting an 8TB Seagate Ironwolf NAS takes about 11 hours :)

I don't normally full-format anything these days as there's not a whole lot of point in it, but this drive is going to be an encrypted backup drive and it won't have its capacity challenged for a very long time so for data security reasons it makes sense to do this.

I didn't take a note of the exact time I started the format, but it was definitely somewhere between 21:00 and 21:30 last night and at 08:06 this morning it claims to have three minutes to go (99.639% done). This is only a vague estimate of its performance, but according to VeraCrypt it looks like the drive peaks between about 240-199MB/sec.

I did zero fill and physical media scan of my 2TB spinner (5400RPM) a couple weeks ago. Good grief. It was 4.5 hours. 12 hours for 8TB seems great by comparison.

Yeah that seems right lol. When I get new drives I always zero them out before I insert them into the raid, that way every sector gets written to once. If there's any bad sector it should trigger an error in dmesg. When I got new 10TB drives I opted to yolo it and didn't do that step because it was just taking too long. If by chance there is a bad sector it will just drop out of the raid and raid will do what it's designed for.
